1040 is near bankruptcy, right?

How the hell are they paying for Mariotti when they don't even have any sponsors? It's just endless PSAs for "being a perfect parent" and Joan Lunden telling me about "A Place for Mom.com" and "the sounds you hear that warn you about an emergency."

They must be selling a lot of "aviation radios from Jaguar" and people must be ordering a lot of low fat food from the Green Polka Dot Box on their Radio Store to be able to afford to pay anyone.

There is only so much sports talk that a community needs or can support. Right now I'm listening to 1040 and the Yankees, but once that's done, I am off to the Rays at 620. Otherwise, there is little reason to stick with 1040-NBC or 1010/98.7-CBS when there is largely local 620/95.3-ESPN to fill whatever limited sportstalking is needed. There isn't anything written in stone that a format HAS to be one thing 24/7. The last time 1040 made noise was when they carried the DooWops. Yes, yes, yes, I understand the demo's are too high. But if no one is listening to redundant sports talk, and advertising of any kind is hard to land, why not try making the frequency something that is frequented with "sumpin diffrent?" If there are obligations to run some portion of NBC sports programming, the ability to get some people at least tuning in for revenue generating unique "sumpin diffrent" programming might at least make the operation viable.

Worst stations for sports in America!!

Not really. Actually typical of what is out there as second- or third-tier entries.

I read this article yesterday about Albert Pujols threatening to sue over steroid accusations, and the entire show that made the comments being fired... the best part of the article is the owner of the sports operation, an LMA, admitting he didn't have the $15,000 for the deductible on his insurance policy if they did get sued.

Outside of the big-time owners, that's what's out there....

When Howard and the guys played the oldies on 1040 it rocked. This was the last stand of personality driven radio in our area. If they were to bring it back.... It would be so cool.

Well, TRN is officially crumbling, due to mismanagement and this ongoing lawsuit with Dial Global... if TRN gives up the ghost, what are they going to put on the air? It seems like they've got Dan Maduri on like 6 or 7 hours a day now... I can't help but notice they don't ever give out call in numbers, or make them available on their website... I wonder what they hell they're thinking over there...

Howard Hewes could do it all from his palatial home in Marietta Georgia..he's got the equipment and the music inventory..and would have a very loyal core base..and would MAKE money..Friday nights from Biff Burger..and the "Gand fazaah, or the waddy-do-DAH" could return..the Megawatt Maverick...he might even move back to St. Pete.

(sigh). Naaaaaah....

What a great time...Howard, Boz, Scotty, Jeff's name shouts, a whole room of great oldies. Never forget what Robbins said to me on my first day.."just go in there and have fun".

Really not sure what Howard Hewes has to do with the original poster's questions regarding 1040's funding, but to answer:

No, 1040 is not currently turning a profit. The station is being propped up by Genesis' chrisitan station revenue and at this point everything they've got is being bet on The Jay Mariotti Show being picked up in a big-time syndication deal.

That's it. If Jay Mariotti fails, so does 1040.
