1045 NICKLEBACK AND CREED FREE BUT WHY

O

When they first launched they played plenty of those two bands, but I remember after a month they had a special liner claiming they are Nickleback and Creed free.....WHY???...these are two great bands which should be played, they have new music out that is really good, especially Creed a top 10 CD......Every Rock station on the planet plays these two bands...WRFF HD-2 plays them both, so why is WRFF against these bands....I also noticed 1045 ignoring the bands they played their first year...Pistols, Stabbing Westward, Flys, Screaming Trees, Nixons, Better than Ezra, Our Lady Peace, Trapt, Story of the year, Semisonic, Candlebox and many others...but I guess what they are doing is working they have fantastic numbers....but bringing these bands back would help them even more...

They still play Better Than Ezra, Semisonic, and Candlebox

I don't know about everyone else, but if a station in my area announced they were going to stop playing Creed and Nickelback, I would make a point to tune in the station more. Nothing kills a decent set of tunes more than hearing Scott Stapp or Chad Kroeger's whiny voices. I never considered these bands to be "alternative", so maybe 104.5 is just shedding all the Top 40 garbage they've played in the past to appeal to more hardcore alternative fans.

I agree with Almaniac. Those bands just never fit into the alternative slot very well. A step away from them is a step closer to a real modern/alternative format. With the demise of Channel1043 Baltimore I'm hoping Radio1045 keeps getting better, its the only alternative station in my radio range thats still on FM.

Nickelback and Creed just don't belong on alternative radio stations. They're both the epitome of mainstream arena rock. I'm sure both bands grew up listening to Journey, Foreigner, Styx, Bryan Adams ... stuff like that. Besides, doesn't just about every other non-Urban station in the market play them anyway? Yeah, I know the format did play both at one time ... they also played Hootie & The Blowfish and Meredith Brooks "at one time" also. From 1997-2004, the format was trying to find itself. In 2004, when The Killers, Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse had popular songs, it finally did.

What really irks me about 104.5 is their constant playing of certain tired songs that we've heard a million times (Pearl Jam's "Daughter" & "Better Man", RHCP's "Give It Away", Live's "Lightning Crashes", and Offspring's "Come Out & Play" and "Self Esteem" all come to mind), in addition to the way they give heavy rotation to kiddie pop acts like Fall Out Boy and Paramore. And instead of leaning so heavy toward arena rock for their '80s titles (the safest songs from The Police, U2, Peter Gabriel, etc.), I'd much rather hear some old Depeche Mode, Smiths, R.E.M., and acts in that vein. That's the biggest knock on 104.5 - I can hear too much of what they play elsewhere.

Just checked out their playlist. They actually played Evanescence followed by Linkin Park. That's very unfortunate, because those are two acts that would NEVER get any airtime on any alternative station that I program. Radio 104.5 far from my ideal alternative format, and seeing that reminded me why I seldom ever listen to them. A look at their Top 100 also revealed that they are way too into power ballads ... including Fuel's "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)". Fuel's basically the same as Nickelback and Creed, so I find it kind of surprisingly that they play them and not the others. Honestly, I'd like to see them become a real alternative station and ditch all of that garbage. But since the station is popular, the odds of them tinkering with it are minimal.

To quote from the inimitable Charlie Brown, "Good Grief!!" ;D

I think the whole ban on Creed is a leftover approach from Y100. Now I wasn't living in the area when Creed first became big, so I don't know what happened exactly over at y100, but i do remember the y100rocks board members / former dj's were all making a big deal about 104.5 playing them when rff first went onair. Then a week or so later 104.5 started airinf the Creed free promos.

So bottomline thru y100, Philly has been conditioned not to accept creed on a alternative type format, whereas in other cities stations with the same format will play them with no problem.

Ew. Nickleback and Creed aren't alternative artists, they're active rock/mainsteam rock/hot ac artists. Keep them on those stations. No one wants to hear butt rock on a finely crafted station like Radio '45

It really is that simple. The people who like the rest of the stuff on 104.5 don't like these two bands. They actively dislike both. Those bands have their fans, but they're not people who also like the other stuff on 104.5. IOW, Creed and Nickelback just don't fit the format or the demo.

I remember a concert promo on Y100 for Creed. It was a parody to the tune of "My Own Prison(?)" and something like" I rub my chest with vaseline" is about all I recall clearly. I THINK it was Y100...it may have been HFS but its obvious that although Creed was a part of the playlist the DJs dislike of the bands music showed thru. Some bands get airtime because of the suits but they are more Rebel Rock,or whatever West TenTuckAbama brand it wants to be called, and it is tracks like this that steal quality time meant for alt/indie/grunge/techindustrial cuts which tends to piss off the fans.

Why? Because nickelback generally sucks ass. The exception is a few off of their latest album. Creed is good, so that part I don't understand, but nickelback is tolerable. However there are 2 bands I hate with a passion... And I mean HATE... Those 2 bands get played alot on 1045, they are u2 and kings of leon, kings of Leon is worse.

If they can play horrible acts like U2, RATM and Marley, they can sure find some time for NB and Creed...

BUt RATM and Bob Marley are good

Give RATM a listen, not for the music but for their Anti-European(white)-American messages...Same with B.M., Bad Religion and a host of other bands with this change America theory...Listen to the lyrics, forget the melody....

How can one say rocking songs like "Killing In The Name" "Renegades Of Funk" "Gurilla Radio" & "Bulls On Parade" should not be on rock radio? Regardless of message.

Rock is supposed to challenge authority, it has a rich history of that. When rock becomes too safe and boring, like, say, Nickelback, a good old-fashioned rousing "fight the power" anthem is just what the doctor ordered.

RATM fits the demo. IOW, people who like the other stuff Radio 104.5 is playing will generally also like RATM.

Bob Marley is one of these totally-out-of-the-format artists who somehow are played on these alternative stations. 104.5 isn't the only alternative station that plays Bob Marley. Another one is the Beastie Boys. I think the simple answer with those is, they test well with the people who say they listen to alternative stations.

Both Bob Marley and the Beastie Boys have been played on Alt-Rock radio since the inception of the format in the '80s.
