105.1 WNGA Helen

I noticed the last few days I haven't been able to receive 105.1 WNGA Helen. The web site says they went silent due to the economy.

That makes the 8th station in North Georgia to go silent since April.

The "Wolf Creek" stations (WACF 95.1, WYHG both Young Harris and WLSB 1400 COL Copper Hill TN but really most of the revenue came out of Blue Ridge GA) are dark now but they are going to be sold to a part of The Methodist Church. I am sure AD Fraiser's legal counsel will figure out a way to sell dark stations. Look for more religious broadcasters to take over commercial stations. I know this is not GA but it is close:

There was a good comment in the Sylva thread about the affect mill closings have on small town radio. Another factor is Walmart. Walmart has been the main cause of the loss of small, local retailers......it's practically impossible to compete with a business operating on those margins when you're a small businessperson.
The lack of local retailers has been a small market radio problem for years now......it's only getting worse.
All this so we can have cheap, Chinese made crap.
If a well run company like Georgia-Carolina is having trouble staying profitable then things must be really bad. But don't blame it on Obama (although he hasn't helped any....just made things worse).....go back to when Pat Buchanan warned us about "hooking up with the global economy." We've sent all our manufacturing overseas where Chinese peasants work in sweat shops for pennies a day. All this so we can have $400 flat screens......
Our dear ol' "Rocky-fella Republicans" have arranged all this misery for us. With the complicity of most Democrats.......and, most importantly....all of us and our slavish devotion to "lower prices."
Never thought the day would come when I would say "should've listened to Pat Buchanan......!!"

what are some formats that have been tried in helen and failed? what would work there?
Country, a Jack-like format of 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s, and a simul of WGST and a simul of Viva (back when CC owned it) are what I remember.

Prior to Art Sutton taking over the programming, it was LMA'd with kind of a rock AC format. It was by far the best effort anyone put into the station.
