105.3 The Spy

Ferris:

Your work on the Stillwater Spy got me into this business and encouraged my passion for great music. Very excited to hear what you've got planned.
 
The Edge in Dallas circa 1989 WAS amazing... it was so far north, it was the first "Dallas" station I could pick up... usually while still in Oklahoma! I wept when I had to go to the south side of Dallas & the signal got rough.

Although I think of now as a very different time & place for alternative music, if you can do with The Spy what was done with The Edge in Dallas, you should have a winner.

Seriously, what is with this Knife & Fork dude. Enough with the negativity. There will always be naysayers... I think this guy has a vendetta against Ferris...bad blood from the past or something.

Anyways, I saw the story about this on radio-info and it led me here. I'm actually in Boston, but I am a huge alternative music fan. Indie 103.1 LA (R.I.P.), WFNX here in Boston, CD 101 Columbus, FM 94/9 San Diego are a few favorites. I think this is a gutsy and awesome move to make in 2009! Especially with alternative radio sounding like crap all around the country (besides the stations aforementioned, and also with a few stations here and there) We have to make radio GREAT again and Ferris, I wish you good luck on this move!

P.S. Play some Sex Pistols! ;)

I was an active KDGE listener in Dallas in 1990-92. They brought THE new music and I lived to listen to that station every day. When Ferris and Little Buddha reappeared on 93.7 in Stillwater it was great, too! After a boring lull, the Spy in OKC revived my passion for radio again. It was a very sad day when it turned to La Mierda Estación. Now I listen to my iPod or NPR. All the other stations in the city have no soul. Even the classic rock stations play the same 40 or so songs (why? when they have such a wealth to pull from). Plus you have to listen to auto dealer ads yell at you about every 2 minutes. One of the things I really appreciated about the Dallas EDGE, was the ads they produced. They were funny and usually used their really great DJ's as talent. I never turned down the radio when commercials were on like I have to do here. I hope Ferris can keep this medium of excellence alive! I will listen every day. And I will make all my friends listen, too.

i got my start in radio in 1989 @ The Edge in Dallas (The Original), back when we were stuck on stick (94.5fm) that had less than desirable coverage of the DFW metro... some would have argued back then that our meat & potatoes audience was in the dark, plus coupled with the fact that, most if not all of our Core Artists were virtually unknowns! we proved them all wrong. the similarities between The Spy on 105.3 & The Edge on 94.5 to me are clearly, eeriely the same... maybe lightning can strike twice... i realize if you look @ radio coverage maps, maybe this looks like a bad idea... i never have a problem getting 105.3, i know it has limitations... but doesn't everything! nothing is perfect. Spy Artists are not unknowns anymore either, i remember when people said U2 was too weird, too out there, to ever have any "real" success in the US! i keep getting, "whats your demo" easy, EVERYONE! in my years @ The Spy i have talked with rabid listeners ages 15-60... moms & daughters, dads & sons... the famous Sub Pop records used to stream us in their offices!!! radio needs an enema, a wake up call, to become better simply for the sake of being better!!! i know from my experience @ The Edge that WE made them better if for no other reason other than existing!

Lord I hope not! I haven't listened yet, and can't get it in my apartment, so it'll have to wait until I commute tomorrow. I agree with many of the comments...I suppose it's nice to play all the obscure Spy stuff, but if you'd even go halfway "true" mainstream alternative, you could get a few numbers. Play stuff that "regular" people know, and throw one or two of your off-the-beaten path songs in each hour, surrounded by gigantic hits. I remember The Edge playing Duran Duran and Dead Or Alive and Ace Of Base and Alanis and such...why not go crazy and do a bit of that? Why not go heavy on 95X gold? Seems like you did that a bit on the previous try of Spy. That's when I remember getting turned on to the likes of Quarashi's "Mr. Jinx" and A's "Nothing". By all means, throw today's stuff in there, but I'd definitely rather hear Phoenix and Muse and Mute Math and Owl City than Chevelle and Kings Of Leon and Slipknot and Puddle Of Mudd.
 
If you are south of Lake Hefner, those pesky jets at Will Rogers Airport can affect 105.3's reception when they are landing or taking off, sometimes... When the signal flutters (increases & decreases in signal quality, rapidly increasing in rate).
 
A question I have wondered about... Could the 105.3 frequency be moved into OKC metro with a reduction in power? I see these translators operating at 250w at 94.1, 95.5, 101.5, etc., and they seem to come in better in the metro area than 105.3 does with its 930 watts. I don't know the ins and outs of 2nd adjacent channel spacing, but could 105.3 be operated from the north side of metro with perhaps a 500 watt transmitter at 100 meters high, or would that be too close to KROU and KKWD?

With 105.5 in Chickasha, I would think that would be a tough putt.

Very good point. Even with putting 105.3 in the Edmond area, you are probably right. If it could be done, Citadel would've probably tried it (back before they were in financial trouble).

Fortunately, I have a few good radios that can get in 105.3 in my house (by the fairgrounds). The Grundig G8, while small, does a very good job at getting in 105.3 without interference from 104.9 (which is a mile away from my house).
 
I never had a problem getting 105.3 in my car around the metro (except Moore-Norman, but I didn't go down there much). When I lived in NW OKC (122nd and Portland), it came in all right with a dipole antenna. In Midwest City, it was a little tougher.

Does anyone have problems with 105.3's mobile signal?
 
I had a Dodge Durango and it got 105.3 great all over town - it started to fade out down by Will Roger's airport - and it fades out completely past crossroads. But I realized my (stock) Dodge radio had a pretty good quality receiver as many of my friends did not get the same reception that I did.

If you look here: http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KINB&service=FM&status=L&hours=U that purple line is pretty accurate, but you also need a decent radio to get halfway between purple and blue.

As for the reception discussion, I am on the east side of Forest Park, and while the Pioneer receiver has nothing, I am getting a clean, decent signal on my old Sanyo portable with the rabbit ears.
