105.3 WFIV - Format Change?

According to All Access, WFIV will be switching to classic hits today. There is also a "Save WFIV" page on Facebook that has apparently been around since the middle of August which also states a change is coming on 9/4.
 
Interesting. You just have to be on the West side to get a good signal from it. I'm assume standard classic hits as opposed to WNOX's classic rock approach

Yes, that signal is about as rimshot as you can get. I'm on the west side and the signal is still weak for me. As for the format, I wouldn't be surprised if Westwood One's classic hits ends up there.
 
It'd be an easy fix. I've been to the "save WFIV" page and they are blaming the GM and saying low sales are his fault, and a 501c3 offered to take over the station.

WFIV's problems would seem to be 1) No signal in most of the market. 2)A format with very niche appeal that didn't work on a 1000 watt behemoth and 3) did I mention no signal?

Now if Horne wants to unload the signal, it might be a nice western outlet for WDVX

I would agree that it's a combination of an inferior signal and poor programming. I was starting to really enjoy the station around 2008-2009 when they were just called "105.3 WFIV". They closely followed the national AAA charts for currents and played interesting classics. Then shortly thereafter they started calling themselves "I-105" and the music became unfocused and they started playing Americana at night. They lost me as a listener at that point.
 
I am surprised the current format has lasted as long as it has, it's usually an annual thing for this station to flip to something else..since 1990 when it came on the air it's been through 6 sets of calls and probably twice that in different formats. It's licensed to Loudon with its tower located in Lenoir City. You would think it would have better coverage in Knoxville. 93.5 in LC has a decent signal all over Knoxville and their tower is farther south than WFIV.

Here's a novel idea, try serving the community of License. Loudon County doesn't have a full power FM serving it. WLIL AM has a translator and their are a couple of LPFM's in Loudon. WLOD in Loudon and its translator are pretty much a non player since it is simulcasting 850 and 1400 in Maryville. Put the studio in with the Sweetwater stations that Horne owns.
 
I suppose they can't move too far in because of Mixx 1055 in Sevier Co. Is there enough revenue in Loudon Co for a commercial radio station? (Probably more than being a deep rimshot in Knoxville of course)

Sounds more like oldies than Classic Hits. Loud Media should try to aquire it. It would pair nice with 105.1 in Sevier county.
 
Yecchh to Mid-Century Radio. I can give it a TSL of about 3 minutes. Are they simulcasting 98.3 in Sweetwater. I caught just a couple of minutes, between "Five O Clock World" and "Travelin' Band", with a very loose transition, like no one had set end points yet.

It's not simulcasting with 98.3, although the music mix is similar. Imaging on 105.3 is bare bones. It actually reminds me of Horne's previous Oldies attempt here, Mighty 670 WMTY. But I'm enjoying the new format. It helps with easing the pain of losing oldies on 104.9.

Speaking of 98.3, it amuses me how they have produced artist promo sweepers for obscure one-hit wonders. I heard one the other day which said something to the effect of "Oldies 98.3 plays Pacific, Gas, & Electric" followed by their very minor hit, "Are You Ready?" Was it really worth producing that sweeper for a song that should probably play no more than once per week?
 
I do wonder the reasoning behind running 2 separate oldies stations instead of just simulcasting. Doesn't alot of their coverage area overlap? Why not just do an Adult Hits format like Jack FM to separate the music a bit?
 
I can remember WMTY 670/98.3 running Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel after Citadel had to move News/Talk there after losing the lease to 100.3. Apparently 98.3 goes all religious on Sundays, but they kept TOC on 670. After the original TOC folded they took the programming local, but as I recall 670 wasn't much longer for this world. The only part of the market 98.3 can be heard clearly in is Blount County

"Mighty 670" was probably before you got here. Back then 98.3 was also oldies but it was "Kool 98.3." Horne really does like oldies apparently.

98.3 can be heard in West Knox too. 105.3 is slightly better. But as Sikesmedia mentioned there likely is signal overlap. I'm sure Horne has considered that though.
 
98.3 WMTY would have a much better signal if they would get the antenna off of the AM tower in Sweetwater. It is only at 135 ft. HAAT. get it up to the minimum 300ft HAAT it might get a better signal into west Knoxville and other areas.
