105.5 Worcester Pirate

I haven't heard that station on air for 2 weeks. Did FCC finally shut them down?

I'm not in that area to confirm if they are broadcasting on the FM band or not but I just checked the stream and its still up. There is also a webcam on the Flava website (http://www.flava105.com). Either they got raided or they didn't spend a lot of money on equipment because all that can be seen is a DJ mixer (the type that mobile DJ's use), a karaoke mic, and a laptop in an almost empty room.

Uncle got them...

NOTICE OF UNLICENSED OPERATION

Case Number: EB-09-BS-0009

Document Number: W201032260038

The Boston Office received information that an unlicensed broadcast radio
station on 105.5 MHz was allegedly operating in Worcester, MA. On March 4,
2010, agents from this office confirmed by direction finding techniques
that radio signals on frequency 105.5 MHz were emanating from your
studio/transmitter location at 18 Grafton Street in Worcester, MA. The
Commission's records show that no license was issued for operation of a
broadcast station on 105.5 MHz at this location in Worcester, MA.

Funny, the local paper ran an article on these guys. It didn't take long before the FCC paid them a visit. That's what you
get for flaunting.....

Also another got nabbed,

NOTICE OF UNLICENSED OPERATION

Case Number: EB-10-BS-0016

Document Number: W201032260036

The Boston Office received information that an unlicensed broadcast radio
station on 102.9 MHz was allegedly operating in Worcester, MA. On April 1,
2010, agents from this office confirmed by direction finding techniques
that radio signals on frequency 102.9 MHz were emanating from your studio
at 97 Webster St., Worcester, MA. The Commission's records show that no
license was issued for operation of a broadcast station on 102.9 MHz at
this location in Worcester, MA.

Worcester is becoming the hot bed of pirate radio? I think I know this last guy, I believe he's from Guyana

As of yesterday, 105.5 was back on the air and interfering with the new FM translator for WPKZ-AM in Fitchburg on 105.3 If it wasn’t broadcasting, 105.3 would have been an easy catch in the Vernon Hill section of Worcester.

102.9 was off the air but I heard a new pirate on 106.5

Of all the frequencies, they pick 105.5? Are these pirates DUMB or what? 105.7 puts a great signal in the Worcester area and is a major licensed station. I would think 105.3 or even 104.9 would be better in that area (not that I'm advocating pirate radio)

I am listening to Hot 87.7 and I am LOVING IT !!! Big Up to Hot 87.7 for that Guru tribute ( Guru a Boston Born Hip Hop legend whom passed away due to cancer ).

WB1MDJ thinks they should have picked 105.3 (or 104.9) as their dial position. With all the hoops that WPKZ went through to get their 105.3 translator, I would be even more upset than they probably already are given the interference from the Worcester pirate being on 105.5

The pirate radio operators continually thumb their noses at the FCC visits. The FCC needs to visit with not only letters but with a truck and seize the equipment.

Another front page article in the Worcester Telegram today. This is probably not going to end well for them. They are probably going to get stuck in a trap worse than being nailed for operating a pirate radio station. If they indeed told the FCC that they have ceased broadcasting but still are, then it wouldn't surprise me if the operator gets charged with lying to a federal officer, which probably carries heavier penalties.

According the the FCC’s website, operating an unlicensed radio station is punishable by steep fines, seizure of equipment and, in rare cases, criminal prosecution.

WORCESTER — The Federal Communications Commission has issued a second cease-and-desist order against a pirate FM radio station, which also is receiving criticism from a Main South neighborhood activist for promoting after-hours parties.

Flava 105.5, a reggae and hip hop station in business for about two years, was notified by the FCC on April 15 that it does not have an FCC-issued radio license and should immediately shut down its operations. The notice was sent to station manager Leroy Simon Jr. at the station’s office, located in an office building at 18 Grafton St. The FCC had sent a similar notice to Flava 105.5 a year ago, when the station’s transmitter was located in a private home at 4 Camassa Terrace in Worcester. ....

I'd assume a NAL will be issued with a $10,000.00 fine that will never be collected, a waste of tax payers dollars if they don't. Then again I'd assume this guy will move on and start up another somewhere else. If the FCC confiscated the equipment he'd at least have to buy it again to get back on the air, some small penalty.

That is what is great about radio you don't need that much equipment. Probably why you never see a pirate TV station.

Based on what I've read in the paper and on this board, I think these so-called Pirates are just crooks. They seem to think that the rules don't apply to them, just as a common thief doesn't. They should be treated as any thief or criminal is treated. I bet a few months in the House of Correction would "get their minds right". The fine would hurt, but they'll just pay it with stolen money and steal more. A little time on the inside will cease their operation and get their attention.

Art,

I can't agree more but when you look at the circumstances/individuals you'd probably have more luck deporting than any criminal action....and deportation ain't happening.

If I were King.....

Ah, now I understand. These so-called Pirates are given special consideration because they are special people. Say no more.
