105.7 Crush FM Launches

After a cover of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by Ray Charles, 105.7 Crush FM has launched with a 90s Hits format: WQSH are the new calls (too bad WXLE wasn't available, and wonder why they didn't go with WHRL), and the very first song was "Get This Party Started" by Pink... followed by "Crush on You" by the Jets, "Crush" by Dave Matthews, and "Crush" by Jennifer Paige were the first songs played on the new station. :p

This format may work in my opinion. Listeners who grew up with the 90's music have a place to go on the dial now especially if someone don't have Sirius/XM. None of the top 40 stations here play 90's or if they do, it's hardly any.

I agree with the "Yawn" comment.
ALL three companies (Pamal/Townsquare/ClearChannel) are trying to get their lower-rated stations further up on the ratings lists. And quite frankly.......there is no where to go except steal the ratings from the stations that are working and the people in the market seem to like.
So all there is to do is COPY what the other stations that are at the top are doing, just call it something different
100.9 is doing it, The Bridge-Variety, yea ok this is just another 99.5, to go after their ratings
104.9 also, Pamal can't figure out what to do with these stations so their going after WGNA since Country has been number one in the market forever.
Now Townsquare is getting into it with their lowest rated station, (105.7) also going after 99.5 and 106.5 ratings with music that the demographic is listening to on those stations which are always in the top TEN in the market.
If you truely want to stand out and do something different, then do just that.
Don't copy other stations to steal their ratings.
The only way for a station to succeed is ORIGINALITY, and to be DIFFERENT, not the SAME !!!

So far, I'm actually liking this station... sure is a fresh change from Cat Country (why not simulcast Froggy again?) or Bridge... and I was thinking it would either be yet another CHR (either Rhythmic or Rock), but Townsquare surprised us all with a 90s Hits format. :)

104.9 really needs to go back to its roots as modern rock "Z104.9", and how about either a WKBE simulcast (or would that overlap too much with a modern rock format on 104.9?) or a Froggy simulcast on 100.9? I think had WHRL not flipped from smooth jazz to modern rock, maybe Z104.9 would've survived to this day.

Another thing: this all-90s format reminds me of when 104.5 (the former home of the Buzz) went to an all-80s format after the failed "Jammin' Oldies" experiment just over a decade ago in December 2000. Wonder if Crush FM will eventually evolve into a CHR/Rhythmic or similar in a few years, like how the all-80s Buzz eventually evolved into Hot AC by 2003 or so :p

Edit: How about putting an all-80s format on WQSH-HD2? :)

Does WQSH broadcast in HD?
Yes, as a matter of fact, two of Regent/Townsquare's stations are broadcasting in HD right now: WQSH and WGNA. However, they only have HD1 as of now, and no HD2 or HD3 channels (really wish WQBK would go HD too :(). Clear Channel (98.3, 99.5, 102.3, 103.1, 106.5) and Crawford (96.7)'s FMs also have HD radio (I think WOFX-AM and WGY-AM are both in HD, but for how much longer? and WDCD doesn't even do HD anymore), and I'm certain WAMC is also broadcasting in HD radio as well. Now, all we need is for Pamal to join the bandwagon too (Magic on WYJB-HD2? Maybe Urban AC on WAJZ-HD2? :D)

WMHT 89.1
WAMC 90.3
WPTR 96.7
WTRY 98.3
WRVE 99.5
WKKF 102.3
WGY-FM 103.1
WQSH 105.7
WPYX 106.5
WGNA 107.7
Are all in HD. All but the Townsquare stations have HD2's and WAMC has a HD2 & 3.

The only person I would see in this is Ellen Rockwell. DJ Thomas is happy in Hot-Lanta. Ally Reed isn't leaving her PD post. Glen Stacy, from what I hear is Very happy at Albany Med. Count out Ric Mitchell.

You didn't mention anyone form The former Buzz...Personally, the only person I can think of is keeping is Darcy. Maybe putting Mark on nights...Doing a 2-person morning show.

True about Ric Mitchell, he's been out of the mainstream CHR style formats since early 80's on 980 WTRY. Mark Vaness just doesn't fit in capital district radio.

Darcy sounds rushed on every break and Meredith was a joke. Julie Feiner sounded VT.

Since we're being honest, clean out the office and bring in all new talent.

Mainly looking forward to Ellen Rockwell and Sugar Bear on Crush, here... it'd be interesting to see WQSH's first book under the new format :)
