105.7 History

105.7 had a complicated history over the past dozen years or so, that much I knew. I decided to go snooping for more, and here's what I came up with:

  • 11/1961 - WBMD-FM - simulcast of WBMD-AM (Country)
  • 1970 - WBMD-FM (Country during the day, hard rock at night)
  • 07/1971 - WKTK-FM (Progressive Rock)
  • 1977 - WKTK-FM (Disco)
  • 1979 - WKTK-FM (Oldies)
  • 1982 - WQSR-FM (Oldies)
  • 09/2001 - WXYV-FM - "X105.7" (Urban) (Oldies WQSR moved to 102.7)
  • ??/200? - WXYV-FM - "Live 105.7" (Hot Talk)
  • 01/2005 - WHFS-FM - "The Legendary HFS, Live on 105.7" (Hot Talk/Alternative) (after 99.1 WHFS flipped to a Spanish format)
  • 10/2005 - WHFS-FM - "105.7 Free FM" (Hot Talk/Alternative)
  • 02/2007 - WHFS-FM - "FM Talk 105.7" (Talk/Sports)
  • 11/2008 - WJZ-FM - "105.7 The Fan" (Sports)

105.7 signed on in 1963 as WCBC-FM, a 2,800-watt religious station owned by the Brinsfield family. It was sold to Key Broadcasting (WBMD) in 1968. Around 1972, tower was moved from I-95 South near I-285 to Moravia Road, and the station went 50,000 watts directional (with 2,800 watts toward York, PA).

Around 1978 after 98 Rock launched and took away WKTK's audience, WKTK's format was changed from rock to disco, which was short lived. The frequency went through a number of formats, none successful.

When the call letters were changed from WKTK to WQSR in 1982, it was because owner Carl Brenner signed with ABC for the network's new "Super Radio" satellite top-40 format that ABC canceled before it launched. WQSR went through a couple more formats; at one time, they were MOR with CBS News. Eventually--I'm guessing around 1986--they evolved into oldies, and the station became successful.

I got a chance to listen to WKTK while traveling through the area a couple of times in 1975. It was a good sounding progressive rocker!!! And WHFS on 102.3 in those days was phenomenal!!!

WKTK was a great progressive rocker, that I listened to a lot here in Delaware. Likewise when it switched to oldies. They knew what they were doing and did it well. Once you got south of Newark, DE, they completely killed Oldies 9 from Philadelphia.

It was also one of the Top 10 Oldies outlets in the country.

From the summer of 1983 to about the spring of 85 WQSR was a top 40 station and then went to an oldies AC to all oldies by 86.
