105.7 History

Prior to The Brew's launch in 2005, what aired on 105.7? I believe all-70s was tried twice, though don't know the timetable the rest of the time.

Pre 1992: The Power Pig
1992-1994: Hot 105 (and for a time simulcast on 107.1)
1994: Kiss FM
1994-?: Arrow
1997: Kicks 105.7
1997: Simulcast with K-95
1997-?: Channel Z

Actually, KISS-FM launched on 12-15-93 and was replaced by Arrow in 4/94. I have the Hot to Kiss flip on tape & remember it well. Bo Michaels was on the air during the switch. Last song on Hot was Jimmy Cliff "I Can See Clearly Now"; First song on Kiss was "Make It Happen" by Mariah Carey. Channel Z wasn't on 105.7 until the late 90s. Also, don't forget about 105.7 The Fox, which replaced Z, followed by The Brew.

Also, the signal started on the current 104.3 tower https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=40.30611,+-83.32917+(WNNP-FM)&om=1

It then moved to a tower that is now gone, just NW of the US 33, US 42 interchange south of Marysville https://maps.google.com/maps?q=40.174152,-83.24496&hl=en&t=m&z=14

Finally, they moved to the Nationwide tower in June 2000 with a new COL of Hilliard. It was Channel Z from roughly 8/98 until the move downtown when it got blown up for "World Class Rock, The Fox".

The FCC database callsign history gives you a good time line http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.../call_hist.pl?Facility_id=64716&Callsign=WBWR

I think of any of the incarnations of the signal the "Best Radio" was done when it was Hot 105 and also Radio Z...or at least when the best talent was on signal...and I suppose I would also have to include the Power Pig staff on that too.

Re: 105.7 History / and 107.1

It's best formats in my opinion was Power Pig and when it was Hot 105.

Channel Z lost a lot of its joy by the time Jacor moved it to 105.7 because they had to divest 98.9. Was never a big fan of the various Arrow spins that made up 105.7 and 107.1 for a period of time in the 90s.

The Hot 105 / Hot 107 simulcast started around May of 1993 if I remember when 107.1 flipped from "The Light WTLT" (an early attempt at 24/7 CCM in this market) to a simulcast with 105.7 (since at the time both 105.7 and 107.1 had very rim shot signals...at one point if I remember 107.1 was on a short 100 ft tower off Route 23 near Circleville (at the former grounds of now dark/deleted 1540 WNRJ Circleville which was a day timer).

I can't remember the dates they flipped to Arrow.. 105.7 did at first.. then eventually there was a simulcast again with 107.1 if I remember (Kiss was alone on 107.1 before it's demise and flip to an arrow format.. I also remember kiss having studios off Henderson Rd and occasionally having issues with their T1 connection to Circleville) - I was a youngin at the time and hated listening to WNCI because NCI was "softer" than Sunny.

If I remember both 105.7 and 107.1 split again with different "Arrow" styles before 105.7 became Kicks Country in early 1997 then later in 97 (I want to say around April or May they became a simulcast of K95.5) and in January of 1997 107.1 was flipped to "The Big Wazoo" which was an automated Rock format.. [People used to joke that 107.1 was ran from a closet when it was "The Big Wazoo" as it pretty much was talent-less during it's entire run as a rock format] -- I know some syndicated shows aired there and maybe one jock shift before it flipped to Wink.

105.7 flipped to the Classic Rock version of Arrow in 4/94. 107.1 flipped from Kiss-FM to a 70s version of Arrow in January 1995. I taped some of the last day of Kiss on 107.1. Kiss was the de facto CHR in Columbus when Dave Robbins decided to lean WNCI AC. I've never really been a fan of WNCI, but that "3 decades of music" era was some of the worst radio I've ever heard.
I lived in South Vienna back when Hot/Kiss was on the air, & was my old boombox & later stereo combo picked both up quite well. Of course, this was back when 105.7 was on the old Marysville signal. How I picked up that horrid 107.1 signal I'll never know.
IIRC, The Gatekeeper was the only jock on The Big WAZU. Opie & Anthony were on 3-7 weekdays for awhile. Ironically enough, The Big WAZU on 107.1 was EXACTLY the same when it was on 102.9 in Springfield. Same imaging, format, etc. Who did their imaging? That guy was a growler. His voice always freaked me out.

Hot 105 IMO was the best station that we ever had in Columbus. I still miss Hot 105 to this day.

Me too. I didn't work there long (a few months), but it was a blast!

Back in the 80's till I think 1990 105.7 was in Westerville at Otterbein University. Because it was a Class D, they lost to Rob Case, and they went to 101.5, which they were at till recently where they are now at 97.5.

From the dates Call signs were issued, the history should be something like this

WNRJ - The Power Pig, Power 105.7 - 02/07/1990
WWHT - Hot 105 - 03/07/1991
WAKS - 105.7 Kiss FM - 1/31/94 - Then Changed to Arrow 105.7 - 04/01/1994
WHQK - K95/105 - 02/03/1997
WKFX - the Fox - 01/20/1998
WZAZ-FM - Channel Z @ 105.7 - 09/14/1998
WFJX - 105.7 The Fox - 06/30/2000
WBWR - 105.7 The Brew - 09/22/2005

I remember the Arrow incarnation well. It introduced me to a lot of classic rock, but it was pretty light in that format compared to stations like QFM96, WTUE and definitely its Fox and Brew selves. Mixed in James Taylor and a lot more Boz Skaggs than you'd hear on real classic rock stations. I gave 107.1's version of Arrow a try a few times and couldn't listen long.
It always came in well out on the east side where I lived (off Brice and Refugee), but usually was pretty scratchy by the time you hit Lancaster to the east and Indian Lake to the west.

I never understood why they reimaged Hot 105 to Kiss-FM on 12-15-1993, only to change formats to Arrow on 4-1-1994. I was furious when Kiss was flipped to Arrow, although I could pick up Kiss(barely)on 107.1 near South Vienna. Anyhow, what was behind the sudden 105.7 flip from Kiss to Arrow? I'm still baffled by that. I thought Kiss was a great Adult CHR/Hot AC hybrid.

The Fox versions of 105.7 were a lot like that.  E.g., you sure wouldn't hear the Gordon Lightfoot they played on the Brew or Q-FM-96.  Arrow 105.7 also mixed in some "graffiti oldies" from the mid-60's like "Time Won't Let Me" by the Outsiders.

it was around that time that stations around the country were really being pressured to stay away from "Rap" there has been a lot of crimes associated with some hard core rap groups and advertisers were not really wanting to be tied to the situation in anyway.

this was about the same time that WNCI started using their "not to hard not to lite" positioning. and Hot 105/107 even though they were pulling some really good numbers, had trouble making the revenue match the success.

I remember WNCI using "Not Too Hard, Not Too Lite" as far back as 1987 or 88.  They were "adult leaning" even then, but not nearly as wimpy as in the early 90's.

I agree with Nu Roo 2, WNCI was using the "Not too hard, Not too lite" slogan back in the late 80's way before Hot 105 ever hit the airwaves.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but didn't former Columbus mayor Greg Lashutka destroy of Hot 105's music collection outside the studio with a steam roller in the parking lot? I kind of remember being really pissed off about that.

Yep. Part of the "No more gangsta rap" bandwagon that year.
