105.7 The Groove gets Bigger, Better & Louder Labor Day Weekend

I just received The Grovve's weekly email newsletter saying "Labor Day weekend 105.7 The Groove gets Bigger, Better & Louder...details soon!" Could this be the move to 105.3? Or maybe even 96.1?

Let's see: bigger, better, louder... Rush Limbaugh would certainly qualify for all three of these.

Why bother with 105.3? Go for the gusto: 94.9.

The Bull is Melissa Forrest's baby. She remolded the station a couple of years ago, and CC employees associate her with the station. So I doubt they're going to flip 94.9.

Project 9-6-1 does really well in its target audiences of men 18-34/18-49. But I wonder if CC is dying to have an Atlanta station in the top 10.

The Groove is still somewhat of a niche product, and I don't think its billings will ever be commensurate with the value of the 96.1 signal; unless it goes mainstream CHR.

I've stated this before, but I feel The Groove would be wise to move to 105.3. It has a much better Atlanta signal than 105.7. And Spanish got big ratings on 105.7 because of the signal's strength in Gwinnett. So to me, switching frequencies with El Patron would make tremendous sense for both The Groove and El Patron.

All of that said, who knows what they'll do?

Makes you wonder why CC just didn't put The Groove on 105.3 and El Patron on 105.7 to begin with.

As long as The Groove is switching frequencies and having to change their website, url, logo, Facebook fan page, etc., this would be the perfect time to drop The Groove and re-brand the station. "The Groove" just doesn't cut it in the year 2010 and doesn't even fit the music. CC has used "The Beat" for some of their other Rhythmic/CHR stations but 955thebeat.com still exists so that is not an option. Even "Amp" would fit better than "The Groove." Whatever the case, CC seriously needs to consider re-branding the station.

I agree, "The Groove" does NOT fit the music at all. Something like "The Vibe" or "Channel" would be better.
They seriously need to drop the Prince and Michael Jackson songs, they sound totally out of place on the station now.

I just don't see 94.9 The Bull going away yet. Of course, I can only see the 6+, but 94.9 sits ahead of Project currently....how does The Bull do in its target demo? I would think Groove would bill much more and do better as a Rhythmic CHR than a Rhythmic AC, what they've been doing.

Still...I think WGST on FM figures in to all of this somehow. With WSB on FM now, they can't stay on just 640 anymore.

I'll place my bets for either a name change or possibly a new morning show.

Cox still has The Beat on 97.1 HD-2. Compare the pre-translator, [email protected] 99X.

Perhaps CC is thinking of simulcasting The Groove on both 105.3 and 105.7 and calling it something like 105 Now FM. I don't see them giving up the 105.7 frequency as its signal can be heard loud and clear in the wealthy northern suburbs and counties...unless ,as some of you have suggested, The Groove moves to 96.1 or 94.9.

As long as Clay Hunnicut is still SVPP at Clear Channel nothing will happen with The Bull...that has always been his baby and I'm sure he will not let anything happen to that particular station.

So no one else thinks WGST fits in to this? They're going to have to go to FM eventually and would be wise to do it now. Move the Rhythmic format to a different frequency and put WGST on 105.7?

I can't see that happening. Patron holds its own, and there is a lot of overlap with 105.3 and 105.7, except to the NE.

I wonder if the situation with the Bull is a top line (revenues/sales) vs. bottom line (net profit) situation. How much is CC spending to make Bull competitive with Kicks (which is on a roll lately, versus at the time of the Disney sale to Citadel)? Would that money be better spent NOT competing head-on with a heritage top 5 station, despite Bull's improved Arbitron performance? How are Bull's actual billings doing, versus what they are spending on promotion?

My guess is that WGST goes to 105.3, Patron to 105.7 to pick up Gwinnett and Hall better (and simuls with 96.7), and Groove to 94.9. My guess is that while Project isn't doing as well as Bull, they have virtually no direct competition and can mail it in cheaply a lot more than Bull can. Heck, Groove could do CHR/M, CHR/R, or BOTH and still have no direct competition since both Q100 and Star have their hot AC dreams. Of course, such a flip would likely force either or both of their hands, particularly Q100.

One thing to consider about WGST to 105.3 is that they can pick up listeners to the south and west that can't pick up 95.5 well, so they wouldn't be competing head-on with You Know Who in some areas. Could be a good niche for them--at least until 95.5 moves in.

Jabba, I think you're a genius, simply because I think the same as you.

1) Project has young males wrapped up. With no competition and, thus, less overhead by virtue of little or no promotion needed, 96.1 is safe and easy money in the bank.
2) The Bull will forever be second place to Kicks. Why bother being second place in Country when 94.9 can be first in CHR/Rhythmic? CC's goal isn't to take down V103 (like Cox), it's to make some money. And there is money in Rhythmic and a lot of listeners still adrift that find Star and Q too lame and tame and Hot 107.9 too hardcore. I know kids that like Rhythmic don't have a lot of money to spend but I will assume that 95.5/The Beat didn't survive 11 years and hemorrhage money all that time. And heck yeah, The Groove could lean a bit more mainstream than 95.5 did and put a hurt on Star and Q. Dayparting to a true Mainstream CHR sound in the daytime may be The Groove's best bet. Get those office listeners who will take some rhythmic alongside Train and Kelly Clarkson. Superserve those 18-34 females that sit in an office all day.

And I do believe that once the move is made, The Groove will be rebranded. Personally I like the sound of "94.9...The Hit Music Channel." But that's just me.

The game is cash NOT ratings. For July both 105.3 and Project were down considerably year to year. Bull billed $750K for July v. KICKS at $1.7m for the month.

Who is billing more/most, Project, Bull, or El Patron? Curious about EP as I hear that although Spanish stations don't get high ratings a lot of times they bill a lot.

The changes will come down to money, not numbers. For the hundredth time...I still just don't see The Bull flipping, yet at least. I doubt they'd let that go. If they have any sense, WGST will get an FM slot in all of this.

Yeah, but how much is Bull spending on promotion to pull in that $750K? Not being in the biz I would guess that a #2 country station looking up at #1 probably has to spend a LOT.

Side note: With the increased immigration enforcement the undocumented audience (and the businesses that serve them, and the advertising they buy on Patron) may have taken a hit.
