105.7 The Walrus

Was their first song "I am the Walrus" by the Beatles?

Don't know, but if they have some success I predict that in the spirit of "JACK" copycats we'll see stations around the country switching to oldies under such names as The Sea Lion, The Seal, The Otter (small markets), The Orca (very large markets), The Manatee (only plays Jimmy Buffet and Christopher Cross), The Dolphin (a playful oldies sound) and The Shark (to be conceived by an under-educated VP for Regional Programming who doesn't know the difference between marine mammals and fish).

Bob, the Sea Cow moniker was already taken for the market.

Call me crazy but i love the sharp high ends. There already was an "Otter" back in the 1980's, small market for sure, KOTR in Cambria (the SLO market on the central coast). After listening to the Walrus on line my complaint is it sounds to "A.C." for me and the playlist seems to be centered in the early and mid 70's with no 80's !

I wonder if it is a stunt. The music selection sounds fine. 70s and 80s ARE Oldies, not AC today. But I noticed that they have very few elements, its something that somebody could have cut up in a producdtion room within a few minutes. Be it more elaborate, the whole thing is a bit reminiscient of another "Greatest Hits" station, called The Surf. I hope I'm wrong about that.

By the way, if anybody is interested in hearing what the top rated oldies station in Lubbock sounds like (they are moving Lubbock to San Diego, you know), listen online here: http://www.98kool.com . The stream is not in stereo, but don't worry, the station is.
That's the station I listen to every day.

Yes, the 80's are oldies and I want to hear them on the Walrus. They do need more elements. I hote the very loose cold segs with nothing in between.

I wonder if it is a stunt.

Doubt it...
The new PD is in town and he has a strong oldies pedigree...
Could it be that the change was made hastily to pre-empt anyone else from contemplating a move to oldies?
Perhaps the "peeps" needed to make the imaging sizzle are simply not in place yet.

What else you wondering about Garrett? That was an easy one...

Wel, since you offered,
I'm wondering:
Who else will be on besides Dave Mason;
When the webiste will be fully interactive;
What else is planned for "The Walrus..."

That's all I can think of. Anyone else?

I'm wondering:

Mason could be it, or maybe one other person. There may be some budget constraints from hiring a full air-staff…We Duncan & Mel fans may have to wait a bit for them to reunite here in SD…Music that hasn’t been played for awhile is novel enough to carry the load in the short term BUT yes talent will have to be a part of the product if The Walrus is in it for the long haul…

When the webiste will be fully interactive;

My guess is you’ll see upgrades to the web site in the next couple of weeks…

What else is planned for "The Walrus..."

The Walrus will introduce a mascot very shortly. For liability reason and to avoid issues with PETA, it will not be a real Walrus but rather a person is a Walrus suit. "Wally Walrus" will be seen at Padre Games, posing for pics with kids and drunken Padre fans.

Remember, The Walrus is a work in progress -- like the first wave hitting the beach at Normandy…Step number #1 is to establish a foothold, step #2 is to dig in and then let the battle begin..
I’m getting goose bumps…

Just a bit of history re: Mr. Lynch. He gets in a tad early sometimes, and a little under-prepared and planned, but he always comes out smelling like a rose. Luck of the Irish and all that. He'll make a winner out of this. Hell, he'll probably be syndicating and consulting it before it's over.

The beauty behind The Walrus and its future: Padres Baseball. The games give the format a huge amount of sampling.

Baseball is a family event...and The Walrus has the beginning of a fine family-oriented radio station, much like K-EARTH 101. In combination, those two factors will bring BCA A LOT of revenue in the months ahead. The cross-promotion possibilities make my head spin...

With excellent audio processing, the existing music mix, and the addition of an intelligent, entertaining personality or six, and The Walrus will be a wonderful revenue producer.

...that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I'm guessing the baseball simulcast will only be a part of the Walrus this year...a fulfillment of contractual obligations. Next year the Padres will only be on 1090. But it WILL help the cume building effort NOW and get some much needed sampling. Enough, though? Doubtful and with a light inspection of today's radio landscape, cume-building promotional budgets have all but dried up. I don't think a guy in a Walrus suit is going to convert a non-beliver. Prediction: oldies will have a tough go AGAIN in San Diego. Sure the population is graying and the boomers are booming but the lack of passion is just not there for another oldies startup. K-EARTH has incredible LA market equity. It's a product that's been passed down through a couple of generations. A new oldies station in San Diego will meteorically rise to a 1.5 - 1.8 share and languish there. Now with limited expenses i.e. a morning guy and a production guy already on the payroll voice-tracking a 3-hour shift, perhaps they'll generate enough revenue to be satisfied. Only time will tell. Now toss that walrus a smelt...he's hungry.

105.7 is there because of the Padres. 1090 sounds good in la LA, but can't be received in Alpine, Julian, and east county. Dismiss that theory of next year.
