105.7 The Zone flips to Classic Rock as 105.7 The Brew.

I share the disappointment of a lot of sports fans around town today. I like classic rock but this is the last format we need even more of in this town. One of their FMs simulcasting 610 would a better decision, IMO. The Zone must not have been doing well, however.
They were a nice alternative to 97.1 and the afternoon shows are not in the same class. McCoy and Jackson had a vastly better show than what Common Man and T-Bone (seriously dude, we know you love the Crew, nobody cares), have become.
Matt McCoy and Lori Schmidt will continue at 610. Both announced that today via Twitter.
Now what becomes of their game inventory? 105.7 had the Bengals, Cavaliers and Indians. 105.3 carries a partial Reds schedule as well as Ohio University sports. Guessing the Cavs are gone, the Bengals stay (they're also on classic rock WTUE in Dayton) and who knows about the Indians. iHeart can't even clear a full Reds schedule. What do they do with two MLB teams to squeeze in somewhere and 610 apparently not being an option?

I really enjoyed the first few weeks of "The Brew", and I don't know if it's already burn-out from their playlist or if the "newness" wearing off, but I was really excited to hear the 80s, 90s, 2000s rock they were playing in between some of the 'better' classic rock songs, but it seems they're now skewing more towards traditional classic rock than they were in the beginning, and at 41, although familiar, most of these songs too old for my generation. I was 3 in 1980.

I've asked this question before, and many seem to agree, but why isn't the industry moving this way: I'm a 41 W/M and there is no station that caters to my musical taste. Classic Rock is too old... 70s songs were 20 years old when I was in grade school and early 80s songs were 20 years old when I was in college. I know 54 is the top end of target demographics, but when will my age group become a target demo? Is it because my generation is too fragmented between rock/pop/country/R&B? Do I fit on the edge of too many demos that I must find the music of my "good years" between multiple stations (Jack, Bus, Rewind, Blitz, Brew, Sunny; yes, those are my 6 presets)? If I had to choose one station in Columbus and I couldn't move the dial, it would either be Jack or Rewind.

I'm not a radio guy--only an enthusiast, but it's been incredibly frustrating to listen to terrestrial radio for the past 10 years with no station playing music that prevents me from punching presets.

Just trying to start a discussion--is my demo is left behind by terrestrial radio, or is this generation's (Gen X) musical tastes just too fragmented?

Classic Rock is too old...
Classic Rock is not just 'too old' - it's Classic Re-tread Bad Music. It's a tired format that should go away. How many times do we want to be re-tortured by Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Journey, Foreigner, KISS, Bad Company, Def Leppard, and Black Sabbath. (All rate a strong ICK rating) Move along now, nothing worth listening to here ...
Of course, crap-rap is even worse.
There are some great older bands that are Never played on Classic rock stations - give me Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Eric Clapton anyday.

The last 4 artists you mentioned are played to death on virtually every Classic Rock station in the country. The format is cookie cutter and uses the same tired playlist of roughly 350 songs. If you want better variety, forget about commercial Radio. Try an NPR station or Spotify...

Yet if you look at revenue, these stations go all the way back to the mid-70's as being among the higher billing properties in most markets.

One consequence of this move ... no Indians game has aired yet this season in Columbus. 93.3 of all stations is listed as the new affiliate, but it might be a case where, like with the Reds the past few seasons, only night games will air. At least Reds fans have alternatives thanks to WLW coming in very well here and WQTT from Marysville being a largely dependable signal, especially in northern and western areas.
Indians fans don't have those choices now. There are no affiliates in Newark and Lancaster, and WDLR's translator on 92.9 is blocked in most of the area thanks to WVKO's translator. 1550's signal is spotty at best at night south of the outerbelt and WTAM doesn't come in well down here at all.

Yeah it was interesting when I learned thru a friend that 93.3 is listed as the Indians affiliate. From what I understand they haven't aired any games yet. Same someone like 920/95.1 doesn't pick up the Tribe (they aired on AM 920 for many years before shuffling around Columbus).

My personal guess, and I'll have to wait until Thursday to see if it's the case short of anyone at iHeart confirming, is 93.3 will carry only the night games.
To me, it's a terrible fit inserting baseball into that format, just as the Reds are on 1230 and 105.3. But short of putting play-by-play on 610, which they seem more than hesitant to do, iHeart is out of places to stick baseball inventory. For this market to have these issues clearing the Reds and Indians, seeing as we're the biggest market in those teams' territories outside the home cities themselves, would have been unfathomable only a few years ago. Then again, so did the longtime Indians affiliates in Newark and Lancaster dumping those broadcasts (and even if those stations still had the games, that would do nothing for metro Columbus listeners).
On the face of it, 98.9 would seem like a good option to carry one of the teams, but I've been told by a few people there that they don't want to go too heavy into sports and that carrying the Browns is enough for them. That, and with iHeart owning the rights for both teams, maybe that's a non-starter altogether.

Wow. Thank you for taking the time, certainly. But that is amazing for Delaware to pretty much be the cutoff point in this direction for Indians broadcasts.
Obviously this would be less of an issue if WVKO's translator didn't block WDLR throughout the area, but they do. And even without WVKO, WDLR was listenable in most of the area but not a local signal by any stretch.
Contrast the Tribe's success with that of the Reds, who have struggled for several seasons and have lost some market share here in Columbus over the past 23 years thanks to their own (up and down) success and transplants from northeast Ohio. Still, even with the omnipresent WLW, the Reds have never been without an affiliate in this market in my lifetime, such as the status with that affiliate is at the moment.

I heard them the other day. Not on 93.3, but 93.3-HD2. It appears to be a direct feed of WTAM-Cleveland, as it includes their liners. 610 normally airs on the HD2 channel, but I flipped to AM and heard normal programming there. Bizarre.

That being the case, then I wonder if the night games will end up airing on 93.3's main channel. If so, we find out tonight as it's the Indians' first night game of the year (6:10 p.m. start vs Toronto).
HD2 is better than nothing, certainly, but not sure I've ever heard of an instance where such a major team is limited to a subchannel.

I see the Indians are now listing WOCD HD-2 at the Columbus affiliate. So that makes me ask again, I wonder why the lady who answered the phone didn't mention the HD-2 option. Then again, how many people have an HD-2 radio?

Listening tonight, it sounds like The Brew has dropped all "classic rock". As a 40-something year-old, this is a really good thing, because I was getting tired of all the played out classic rock they were playing. There are enough stations already playing that type of music.

Edit: I guess I just heard a really long streak of late 80s 90s and 2000's rock. There's still a few classic rock songs in there, but not nearly as heavy as it has been for the past couple of months.

Enjoying the Linkin Park, Disturbed, Godsmack, etc. which definitely shows a change in direction.
