105.7 Translator Upgrade- SA

When will the upgrade take place, and what'll happen to the Radio Oasis translator on 105.9 simulcasting KYRQ-FM? Will they have to move?

No, surprisingly they won't. The 105.9 translator is licensed to Lackland City although their service contour doesn't cover it, since the antenna is located a considerable distance to the northwest of there. The contour for the upgraded 105.7 translator (which is to be re-licensed from Pleasanton to San Antonio) will still clear the 105.9 contour at the required level.

I hate how the rules of Translators and regular commercial grade stations have, Because of Austin's translators it is getting harder and harder to DX down to San antonio.

If 105.7 gets city-grade coverage though, this'll be interesting. 105.9 covers a really big part of the northwest area of SA.

According to radio-locator, 105.7 is under construction. Any idea when it will be up and running?

Will CC continue to simulcast KQXT or will a new format appear on 105.7 once the upgrade takes place?

I would say WOAI AM would air on 105.7 after the upgrade. Or KTKR, but I think 105.7 translator will be for WOAI-AM (copying the Emmis idea with KLBJ, sort of) I don't think it would make since to keep simulcasting KQXT on 105.7

The cool thing about these two translators(104.9 & 105.7) is that both are owned by two competitive companies. And the likelihood of SA getting two new formats on FM dial is good.

Possible formats for 105.7-
Rhythmic AC, Hip Hop, Rock, Alternative or a simulcast of one of the AM stations.

Between 104.9 and 105.7, 104.9 covers a more affluent area of town. I can't see how running WOAI or KTKR would be very effective on 105.7. Of course, that doesn't mean Clear Channel won't do it. If it were me, I'd put an urban AC that sounded a lot like the old KSJL on an HD-2 and translate that.

I'm a little confused...isn't K289BN 105.7 owned by Carlos Lopez (same guy who owns K227BH 93.3 FM that's translating his KLMO 98.9 FM)? Is he LMA'ing the 105.7 translator or what?

I agree with you Kent. I doubt CC will simulcast any of their AM stations. However, not sure if there's a demo here in SA to support an Urban AC format.

I think CC will because they do in Austin with KVET-AM, on 103.1 Translator. As for a Urban AC demo, San Antonio could support one, because KSJL lasted from 1992-2007 much longer than Mega in Austin or the old Jamz and KTFM format. On a new HD radio that doesn't have the AM band, a person could listen to a Spurs game on 105.7, if WOAI or KTKR simulcasted on 105.7, plus they could air both KTKR and WOAI on 105.7 by splitting existing programming.

The problem I see with doing this is that 105.7 doesn't put a very strong where WOAI's target audience lives. You could say the same for KTKR's audience. This translator will pretty much serve the southeast side of town.

plus they could air both KTKR and WOAI on 105.7 by splitting existing programming.

I'm not sure what you mean here. If you mean the translator could relay 1200 part of the day and 760 another part, that's not logistically possible. The translator operator must notify the FCC of the station he is relaying. There's really no way to go from translating one station to another and back in one day and notify the FCC each time. I suppose it would be possible to put the best programming of each station on an HD2 and use the translator to relay it, though.

By the way, Infamous is correct that Carlos Lopez is the official owner of 105.7. So, it's entirely possible it will be doing something completely different when it moves in and signs on. Telling the FCC you play to relay an existing station and then notifying you're going to relay something else once you get signed on is common.
