105.7 WLSQ

Has anyone checked this station out? They used to be "South 105" but now they appear to have an all '70s format with old PAMS-style jingles and jocks who sound like they did 30 years ago. I never thought a little Crossville station would come up with something like this. It's great!

Thanks for the info! Just tried to give it a listen only to find it in syndicated programming. I'll have to try it during the daytime. By the way, it looks like Southern has flipped the Breeze. It says it's now "92.7 The Hog The Rock of the Cumberlands." However, it has Elvin Bishop on right now. So, it doesn't sound too rocky.

Yeah they do run the syndicated Tom Kent at night. But when I've listened during morning drive and during the day, it's live and local. I have listened to the new 92.7 "The Hog", and it sounds at times more "classic hits" than "classic rock", but I like it. It's a great alternative to the somewhat stale WIMZ.

By the way, is there any significance to the WLSQ call letters? It's rare that a new station will use their call letters so prominently, unless there is some historical significance to them (perhaps there was a local top 40 in the '70s that used those calls?)

Well, being home from work sick today, I've turned it on, and it sounds pretty good. It's neat to see that station doing something again. In the early-90's, WOFE was known for being creative small town radio with lines like, "Here's the first of another million songs in a row from the station that doesn't count so good!" However, in time, it really stopped doing much of anything as small town revenues continued to decline and satellite programming began replacing more and more local staff. After Southern got it and started making changes, things started sounding better, but South 105.7 and 92.7 The Breeze had virtually no advertising during the times I sampled them, and I never could figure out how those stations made any money.

It sounds to me like they're playing off of WLS in Chicago "Musicradio WLS."

Too bad they don't have a budget for jocks. Even VT'ed Boss Jocks would sound fun. Tom Kent's a great guy.....I've produced his imaging and he's got some hot products. He's 100% barter if anyone's interested in getting him back in Knoxville. www.truckintom.com.

Hadn't heard this station until this weekend -- what a great blast from the past! Not just the same old narrow playlist -- I also heard an occasional long version, an occasional live version, and a few Oh Wow! songs (as in, Oh Wow! I haven't heard that song in a long time). Closest thing I'd heard in a long time to Top 40 radio of the era. I'll have to tune this one in every time I make the trip over to Crossville/Knox/Smokeys.

The calls to me remind me of the era when this music was first played and we'd tune in WLS at nights... and many FMs that were cropping up with this music were known as some variation of the Q, or 94 Q. WLSQ works for me.

They just sold their sister FM for 2.4 million. Surely they can at least afford a few more jingles. Sounds like the same one every couple of songs.

Don't hold your breath waiting for this one to close. The price is 1.2 million cash and 1.2 million in tax credit for "giving" half of the value to the church. That never did get FCC approval when they tried to buy the Lenoir City AM, and it may not pass muster this time. Plus it's contingent on a new transmitter site near Kingston being approved.
