105.9 The beat?

105.9 is sounding bad. Why don't they get DJ's mixshows etc? I'm glad I'm able to DX down to San antonio I was able to enjoy some mixshows today. I miss Hot 93.3.

jras20, I understand where you're coming from but it doesn't make sense for CC to spend the money on air personalities when there's no competitor in the market and on top of that, the format is on the decline. Besides, isn't CC on the verge of bankruptcy?

The Hip Hop community should be glad they atleast have a station to tune into versus people that want a Jazz or Dance station that's not HD-2. :-X

I really couldn't tell you because I have never listened to the station. With no jocks, my guess would be a rotation of about 20-30 songs--pretty typical garbage.

Hey man, havent heard from you in a while. Drop me a line, cuz I lost your email from a while ago. [email protected]

word has it someone has been hired as an on-air staff. Not sure what time but he is starting today... Not sure if its just a jock position or possibly a mix show because the guy that was hired is a mix DJ...

That would be very strange since that station is still up for sale. In my opinion, Clear Channel should tweek and keep it since there is no competition.

If it's the DJ I think you're talking about, he's just doing promotions/street team stuff for now.

They are now the only game in town. No reason to do much tweaking.

I miss Jammin Oldies 105.9 :( Im sure the Rhythmic Oldies format will be back in the ATX soon. :-[

I would like to see Mega HD2 on FM I think that would be nice and you could lump some of the rhythmic oldschool in with the newer dance music.

I agree, it would be nice to see Mega get back in the game. I think Austin is ready for the Dance format again. Maybe bring Miss Kitty back too. She could do mornings, and Boogie could do afternoons. I guarantee you they could pull better arbitron than KGSR. I still don't understand why Texas' strongest FM tower is transmitting an Adult Album Alternative format. What a waste.

I don't know if it really owns that title. Nevertheless, remember the tower was built for a station licensed to Killeen to be able to put a signal over Austin.

93.3 KAJZ was pretty good use to listen to it alot also liked it when it was Hits 93.3

I am certain it owns the title. At 100,000 watts, transmitting at 3,045 feet above sea level and no interference in its coverage area, KGSR is Texas' strongest FM signal. A close second would be KBTE in Lubbock, which transmits at 4,219 feet above sea level with no interference, but only puts out 96,660 watts.

Your original statement about KGSR being "Texas' strongest FM tower" is purely conjecture. I hope you know that the tower structure itself is not the antenna.

And your statement about the height of a station's antenna above sea level has nothing to do with its coverage (or licensing of the station, for that matter). Neither does the height of an antenna above ground level. The operative factor is HAAT, the height of the antenna's radiating element(s) above average terrain. The height of the surrounding terrain, basically in all directions at various distances, is taken into account and in case you're interested, here's a link to information from the FCC site: www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/haat_calculator.html

For comparison here are some HAAT's for three stations in Texas, two of which you mentioned:
KBTE Tulia/Lubbock 978 feet
KGSR Cedar Park/Austin 1,926 feet
KPMZ Flower Mound/Dallas-Fort Worth 2,037 feet

Note that stations who have HAAT's above the maximum for their particular class must reduce power accordingly to provide coverage equal to a station using the maximum power allowed for the maximum height (e.g., KPMZ has an ERP of 90kW, but its service contour is basically the same as that of KGSR).

If you still have doubts, post your highlighted statement above verbatim over on the Engineering Board and ask for comments.

You can claim no interference in the coverage area, but it's not immune from tropo ducting. No FM is. Watch 93.3 in Port Arthur/Houston and Port Lavaca/Victoria bang against it.

So you are saying that KPMZ is the most powerful signal in Texas? It only pushes 90,000 watts. The correct equation is height multiplied by the watts it pushes out, right?

So, even though the KPMZ height above average terrain is slightly higher, it transmits 10,000 watts less than KGSR, which makes a huge difference.

The fact that KGSR owning the title of Texas' strongest FM signal is not conjecture until you can prove another FM signal beats it.

And Fred, you are right about no station being immune to tropospheric ducting. I was speaking of LPFM stations, such as K277BH (KLMO) 93.3 in San Antonio, being inside the station's predicted coverage area. KLIF in Dallas also bangs against KGSR in South Waco, usually only in the mornings, though.
