105.9 The Big (Bird) Talker

Check out their lineup:
http://www.1059thebigtalker.com/programschedule.asp

This schedule makes the now-defunct "3WT" in Washington look normal. Talkers from the right (Levin), left (S. Miller), center (Smerconish), money (Dave Ramsey) and morning zoo (Bob & Tom) every single day - including the weekends. Interesting to note that the only local host, Gary Nolan, doesn't have a best-of on the weekends, like his bird-fed colleagues on 105.9. In fact, there are only two local hours on the weekends: "Street Talk" (public affairs?) and "Irish Power Hour!" What's that, sitting around, taking calls about shalalies for sixty minutes? The weekend lineup is enough to make listeners beg them to carry infomercials!

I think it's interesting that they'd carry Bob & Tom from Premiere, and two other daily shows from Dial-Global, rather than something similar from Citadel's own stable of talk show hosts. Was the bankruptcy decision so good that they're able to give money to their competition? Awful generous of them.

How about scarborough

Instead of stefanie miller they should try to get joe scarborough from their own citadel media. overall they have a good station on 105.9, and not to get political i feel stefanie miller reminds me of sesame street: "one of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn't belong..."

I have have been advocating for a long time on this board for the need of a liberal or at least, a centrist talker in the Syracuse market.
I was hoping that WFBL would go in that direction with the new owner. I just don't see the potential of going up against WSYR with third rate right wing talkers and no local news or involvement. Maybe it will bring in enough money to pay the electricity bill, I don't know.
I do see a great potential programing to the population up and around S. U. Hill. There are more than 30,000 potential listeners there that are being mostly ignored by the Syracuse radio stations, except maybe music stations and these type of listeners mostly listen to their I-pods for music. These listeners are young, educated and have money to spend - unlike the programing to angry old white guys. Now I agree, that probably an AM signal would be probably wasted in that direction, but an FM could catch fire. So I say drop trying to please a little bit of everyone, add Ed Shultz, Bill Press, Alan Colmes etc. and see what happens. It can't do any worse (?).
BTW I love Stephanie Miller. She is sooooo funny and they say she has the best a** in radio. She is intelligent and has the best voice guy I've ever heard as a sidekick. Lighten up and try listening to her. It's an L. A. morning show being heard in Syracuse. You're lucky to have her.

What about WAER? Isn't that sort of their focus?

For the ignorant who may not be aware, the Irish Power Hour is a holdover from Lite Rock 105.9. It's co-hosted by two local musicians who perform covers of popular songs by Irish artists (Great Big Sea, Dropkick Murphys, etc.). Obviously it's now out-of-format... must be Citadel likes the show and wants to keep it on the air, but they don't really have anywhere else to put it.

And the proper spelling is shillelagh.

Get a sense of humor, Bob. I think he made a joke. Know what that is, it's spelled "j-o-k-e?"

And to the WAER comment, I don't think that students want to here Chris Bolt news and no talent student sports shows sandwiched between classical music and a God awful sampling of NPR news. That's why 105.9 is doing something different, or should. Ought to commend the thinking.

Indeed, I have been known to crack many a joke on these boards. Nonetheless, I really had no idea what the "Irish Power Hour" was all about, so BobRoss, thanks for the backstory - oh, and for the proper spelling of "shillelagh." By the way, if I were to throw something into my original statement about, say, drinking... now that might be perceived as ignorant...
