105.something Circa 1987

Greetings, Bay Area listeners, from an east coast imposter. I'm hoping we have a radio historian here who can fill in a few blanks for me. Back around February, 1987 (yes, two decades ago ::)) I flew over SFO en route to Honolulu. I was using the rad electronics possession of its time, a Sony Walkman, and picked up an incredible station for a longer period of time than I expected. I remember hearing the reference to 105.something. It was the last station I picked up before going silent over the Pacific (but I had old Bon Jovi tapes with me! LOL)

Anyhow, on the entire cross-country flight, I picked up several dozen different stations all across the dial, but none left the impression that 105.something did. I left Baltimore listening to Ed Coffey and the Morning Zoo on 100.7 WGRX and stayed on that station until it faded to static, but didn't find another station that captivated me until I hit the left coast.

Can anyone tell me anything about such a station? Not only was it great music, but something about the transmission made it sound superior on my ole Walkman to so many other stations I'd hear back home. Sorry if this whole thing seems silly, but this truly was one of the memories I had of this vacation. I actually was sad to lose this station both on the flight over and the return trip a week later.

Thanks!

Robyn, Isn't Live 105 (KITS 105.3) still playing Modern Rock?

KITS switched from Hot Hits to Modern Rock gradually during 1986, so that timeline would fit. By October 1986, the transformation to Live 105 was complete.

We've got some "before and after" audio from 1986 (Tom Gilligan, Flip Fryer) and 1987 (Steve Masters, Richard Sands) in the vaults over here, somewhere...
