105 The River

I was in the Mountain Top area watching the Crestwood team competing against Coughlin(W-B) in the track and field as I try to listen to my favorite station "105 The River" on my Walkman and I can not even listen to it at all. When the radio was set at 104.9, I was getting strong bleed from nearby 105.1 WILQ out of Williamsport. The 105.1 itself was so strong that it can be heard on many radios in this area.

Also, before I reach the Mountain Top area via Route 309, the River's signal degraded in the car while I was listening to "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees and instead was getting some interference from WILQ. As I reached the Crestwood school grounds, the River is unlistenable.

The River is easily heard in the valley cities of Wilkes-Barre and surrounding towns, but not in the higher elevations of the county. I'll be going to visit Claws 'n' Paws Animal Park in Lake Ariel this summer(hopefully, the gas prices don't go up more than $3 a gallon).

So I don't know if anyone living in the higher elevations of Luzerne County experience this problem. I am.

P.S. Why are Williamsport stations clearer in the Mountain Top area than in W-B?

I am.> > P.S. Why are Williamsport stations clearer in the Mountain> Top area than in W-B?> While 104.9 has a reletively high antenna, it has an exceptionally low power output: it is a very weak class A station. It is hard to imagine because WGGY is one of the three most powerful FM's in the state, so if you are used to the Class B's (GGY, WKRZ, WMGK, WKRZ) 104.9, as well as 97.1, 102.3, and a couple of others are weak by comparison. Add to that our mountainous area and that cuts down on signals quickly. Williamsport's stations (105.1 included) are mostly class B stations, with their class A's high up in the air. Even their 99.7 can be heard occasionally in Wayne County! WKSB 102.7 Williamsport may be the #2 most powerful FM in the state at this point. WWRR was only ever meant to cover the Scranton area, and it does that well, however don't expect to hear it at Claws and Paws: after you leave Lackawanna County and enter Wayne, the WWRR signal begins to degenerate quickly. It can hardly be heard in central Wayne County.<P ID="signature">______________

I've never been much of a tekkie type, more of a programming type with decades in the biz, but WKSB's signal has always been gangbusters. Even back in the days when it was largely wasted as WRAK-FM(it was WRAK-AM that was the star), its signal screamed for at least fifty statute miles, and that is probably understatement. Some folks out Williamsport way will tell you that the signal has long been good for more like a solid hundred+ miles, depending on elevation. The signal likely explains KISS having a respectable audience in Luzerne and Wyoming Counties, especially their morning show with Gary Chrisman.

Yeah, with the exception in Clarks Summit and its surrounding communties, where 102.7 is a translator simulcasting Rock 107. I think anywhere in Scranton, you can only hear the Rock 107 translator, not Kiss FM.
