1050 chum sudden flip

When I went to bed, 1050 chum was running CP 24 news. that was about 2 am pacific time here, and when I just woke up recently it was still running it. IF you go to www.1050chum.com, it just quickly redirects to www.cp24.com Any canadian locals know what is going on with this station? Seems bizarre to just suddenly flip with no mention of it. They ran all their regular shows up until that time frame, then just dumped it all and went to this.

Seems like 1050 has a pretty rocky past, i'm guessing this is a permanent switch now? did they move to a FM frequency or just dump its format forever?

it sucks to lose them, beats the hell out of the garbage that airs down here in the usa for oldies radio!

farewell chum, you'll be missed

Sadly, I caught the press release a day earlier: http://bit.ly/FxrgM
The on-air staff were probably told to not say their goodbyes and continue to promote upcoming CHUM-related shows.

I guess Toronto needs another news station to go along with CFTR and CFRB (sarcastic enough?).

sorry everyone for posting this here, just saw the other thread under toronto :p ugh, need to pay more attention.

it sucks to lose it (again) when I vacationed in toronto for 6 months, it was a breath of fresh air in radio. I came from las vegas where clear channel ruins the airwaves, amazing hearing so many campy and strange non top 40 songs on this station.

sometimes I wonder if the clear channel disease has slithered up there, then I am just reminded radio is in the toilet over all no matter what the corporation is.

would be nice if this economy forced the radio corporations to tank and it goes back to control in the hands of people versus the few, but that's just a pipe dream

I was mentioning on the Toronto board that if it's about saving money, shouldn't they let the camera person go?

Just go with black screen in the top left corner, or perhaps add text or (seperate) photo information.

This business decision would make a lot more sense if CP24 were to operate as a 1050 repeater, and not the other way around.

***Making sense, seperate from the fact that there is already AM 640, 680 news, and CFRB 1010 to compete with.
At least 1050 would be more visually impared friendly this way!

To quote a friend of mine (lurks here, doesn't post here) "It's now the UNNifty 1050!"

Shame on CTV Globe Media for killing a true radio legend without putting together some kind of an on-air tribute, or even an acknowledgement of their rich radio history rockin' Toronto for 52 years.

I also consider the fact that CTV appears to have permanently pulled the plug on the 1050 CHUM website (aka museum) nothing more than an act of vandalism. People spent untold hours preserving CHUM's history on that thing (scanning charts, posting vintage pictures, etc.). What's the difference between this and some headcase walking into a museum smashing display cases with an axe?

Westonsheppup.....I would recommend you check out 1290 CFRW in Winnipeg. One of the few remaining "decent" Oldies stations left in Canada:

However due to the fact CFRW is also owned by CTV they too could be subject to a sudden death.

Actually, outside of morning show, the other shifts were voice tracked.
Depending on when those vt's were done, one *might* think they were produced first, perhaps a whole week's worth in advance (including Friday, which never aired).
Then they would have found out the same way everyone else did through the CNW or whatever.

Actually, the Evanov group would just LOVE to see that happen! They plan to launch a Jewel FM there very soon at 106.1 FM.

If the market research shows that there are better ratings for oldies than there are for Standards/classic oldies I'm sure they'll be quick to snatch up the format.

Unfortunately.
