1050 ESPN - poor night signal on LI

I know that 1050 has a directional pattern, but is it aimed AWAY from LI? It is good enough during the daytime, but for 50kw, the nighttime reception on queens/nassau border near cross isl pkway is limited (to say the least) to a few moments here and there without the swishing and swirling background noise. Is can't be protecting some other station to the EAST???(LOL- or is it?)

There is Toronto's CHUM on 1050, which is also 50,000 watts. It's supposed to be directional and aimed away from New York.

WEPN-1050 must protect not only CHUM, but also Philadelphia's KYW-1060.

Still, it should be able to send it's signal northeast, east, and southeast.

Maybe there is something wrong with the station's night pattern.

It is definitely CHUM, and Oldies station out of Toronto that is coming in over WEPN out on Eastern LI.

Interesting little semi-related tidbit. The day Cablevision and OLN came to agreement on hockey game coverage, but Cablevision subscribers had no audio for the Ranger game, I went to ESPN, and heard only noise (I'm in Nesconset). The next day I told a friend, who advised me that espn.com was streaming the game. I had no idea the NHL would let them do that. There was a delay of about 30 seconds or so between stream and cable broadcast.

WEPN-1050 runs the same pattern day and night. It has 3, 186 degree towers. The pattern is aimed northeast with a null towards Philly. The pattern shape also protects Toronto, and sends a massive signal to NYC. I used to listen to it in RI when it was WHN and later, WEVD. Great signal into southern RI. Perhaps pattern is out of whack?
