106.1 is now all-Christmas

So what will they play from December 26 until the start of the New Year? The Pretenders' "My City Was Gone" on a loop?

I recant everything I have posted here about Dick Harlowe and Chris Shebel. They are not incompetent. They are just insane. Wait, what am I thinking....it's a sunny day. Dick is out playing golf, and Chris is trying to figure out which Chic tracks to play tomorrow. My bad.

Actually, since the new station will apparently be named "Rush Radio," I have a better idea which would tie in: Paula Abdul's "Rush Rush"...

Anyway, enjoy the Christmas music while you can, folks... This sounds to me like a lead-in to the big format change. Question is, how long will they stunt? When RDU first went country, they stunted for only an hour; 93.9 stunted for 12 hours (another after-Christmas format flip) before they became Kiss, and WMFX/WMKS stunted for four days (through a weekend) before introducing the new format at the beginning of the following week--- all part of that 2006 CC slaughterhouse.
Which leads me to my next question: Will 106.1 still carry the Carolina football and basketball games, or will they move either back to 100.7 or to the Capitol sports juggernaut? The last two CC format changes involving the Triangle's Carolina FM affiliate (100.7 back in 2004, and then 106.1 in 2006) happened around this time of year (in the middle of football season and while basketball was getting started).

Given its history, why wouldn't WRDU play "Tom Sawyer" for a week?

By the way, are they playing country or aren't they?

Note to self: download this track for a future "forgotten favorite" for the "Friday Night 90's at 9" show on The Cockroach...

I like your logic. "Rush A to Z" is feasible.

Of course, while I've nothing against 24/7 Christmas music - if nothing more than a quick ratings fix - I question the decision to debut a spoken-word format following the holiday hits... It's much easier to get into the flow on December 26th with an AC kinda format - especially if you consider all of the radios (if not in cars, then in stores) that had the station previously locked in... A listener-friendly format could keep that listenership after the holidays...

They are using the national CC Christmas feed, no surprise.

Will the "106.1 RDU" branding EVER go away? Classic rock, country, now Christmas music. I think it needs to be put out of its misery. I hope it doesn't become 106.1 RDU Newsradio.

They kept WLS the Big 89 as they moved into talk and still use some of the jingles. RDU has the best call letters in the market. Why not use them? SInce RDU was a male oriented format for so long, before all the floundering...it makes sense to keep RDU for the male oriented Talk format. In fact, imaging the station with classic rock bumpers etc would make sense.

Maybe CC will park them on an AM station in Florida or something.

Is this why it sounds like they're a delayed simulcast of 99.5 WMAG? I remember hearing the same delay on 93.9 when they did Christmas music, both as Sunny 93.9 and then in 2007 after they'd become Kiss.

BTW, where is WRDU voice-tracking from? I don't recognize any of the "DJ's" that are on there now; and there is a new voice-over as well (Chris Shebel from Kiss and some female voice-over I don't recognize). Also, the only time the RDU name is used on the air is on Chris Shebel's voice-overs (the legal ID at the top of the hour and when he says "Happy holidays from 106.1 RDU"); otherwise, the station is referred to as simply "The Christmas music station."
As for the Carolina games, we'll see tonight (basketball game vs. Ohio State) what they use for the "10-second pause for station ID"...

Yes, it's not like a satellite feed, so there can be delay. It's just the music is scheduled the same for all stations. WMYI/Greenville, SC is using it as well. WLYT/Charlotte uses the national AC feed, so I predict they will use it when they go all-Christmas also.

Well, it looks like (for now, at least) 106.1 is still airing Carolina games; station ID's I heard during last night's game were the old 106.1 RDU Country voice-over and one by Woody Durham; both voice-overs referred to the station as simply "106.1 RDU" (from its rock days). I also heard bumpers announcing the new "Rush Radio 106.1," coming January 2010.
