106.1 KISS FM EVANSVILLE

One of the best CHRs in the country. They're so much fun to listen to with their hot voicegirl, fun jocks, new music, back in the day triple plays, and their rhythmic lean. I took a listen to their competition Hot 96 which isn't too bad eithe but I am a much bigger fan of KISS FM. Last ratings were last yr, are they still getting killed by Hot 96? I live in Ohio, I happened to check them out going over the road in the semi with my dad.

Hot 96 definitely rates higher than Kiss. Considerably higher. Could be partially signal problems, WSTO is a full-market (and then some!) signal, Kiss is not. Also, WSTO does more external marketing.

Having said that, I find both of the morning shows pretty lame. Atom & Shawnda on Hot 96 and Kidd Kraddick on Kiss. The music mix is fine on both of them.

How long has KISS FM been around? WSTO definitely has a better signal. We were able to grab it forever leaving Evansville. They are both good CHR's, but KISS is more risky and current.

There was a time, about ten years back, that KISS went for the ankles of WSTO that has no competition in those days... Brill had 'STO and it was really a Hot AC day CHR night.. They imaged it as a CHR to the listeners and a Hot AC to the advertisers.. With 100kw and a near 1,000 foot stick, they were a money monster.. KISS realized they could not 'STO in the ADI/DMA, to the kid programming went more 'churban' and did a Tonya Harding on 'STO (as the Nancy Kerrigan).. Beat them around the ankles with a ball bat.... They won teens in the METRO counties and pulled the 18 to 34 gals away from 'STO... Beat them in two or three METRO COUNTY books... Then when Brill folded radio and South Central got them, they pulled 'STO to a trued hot chr leaning.. Why? The old 'STO sold well against South Central's monster AC and long time Market Leader; WIKY... They did not want 'STO to pull so much from the 35 to 44 year old females like 'STO did in their 'no chr compeiton' days...

I remember Kiss Evansville in '99, and it was more of a hot AC than a CHR. My guess is that changed after Cumulus sold it to Clear Channel. Cumulus got it from Connoisseur in late '99, I believe, and they sold Evansville and several other markets to Clear Channel after the stock scandal hit the next year.

STO was always one of those stations you could look at and never understand why it was doing so well. Brill Media definitely subscribed to the philosophy that you were never sold out if you were playing music. I can remember hearing only two songs back-to-back between stopsets. A couple years later, I found myself working for an upstart CHR competing against an ex-Brill station in another market, and we were able to clean their clock in two books largely because they hadn't recovered from their reputation as being spot heavy during the Brill years. I found myself doing time at the dismantled heritage CHR about three years later, and people were still cussing Brill's programming philosophy. I suspect Kiss also took advantage of STO's reputation, though I doubt any Clear Channel station played 20-in-a-row like we did!

Kiss may have become a true CHR when Clear Channel took over, but when Regent took over, it went back to Hot AC for a while. They became more CHR again when they added Kidd Kraddick, early 2008.

Clear Channel Evansville probably didn't gain anything from a "plays less spots" perspective. I bet the GM took a stopwatch to WSTO and said. "All right, they're playing 22 minutes an hour, let's play 20." By the time CC was out, so was Brill.
