106.1 The Rooster

I've noticed some interesting handling of the station's name by talent as of late, referring to it as either "the all new 106-1" or "the all new 106-1 RDU," while the imaging still sticks with "Rooster." Perhaps early signs of a change in the air?

On Their website between songs under the Now Playing it says The new 106.1 so maybe they are going back to a rock format.

Don't you think it is highly unlikely they would telegraph such a move? I know they aren't rocket scientists - but then this ain't rocket science.

I'm a subscriber to their E-newsletter, and the station that once promoted "today's country and the legends" have mysteriously replaced the images of "legendary" artists like Johnny Cash from the E-newsletter. Most recent edition had all current stars (Underwood, Flatts, etc.).

I don't really go to their website all that much (or listen to the station for that matter), but how long has the "Babes or Hunks" link been there? And note the list of videos available featuring babes:

Whitesnake - Here I Go Again
Poison - Fallen Angel
Motley Crue - Girls Girls Girls
Warrant - Cherry Pie
Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel
Aerosmith - Crazy
LL Cool J - Doin It
Duran Duran - Girls On Film
George Michael - I Want Your Sex
Robert Palmer - Simply Irresistable
Prince - Black Sweat
N.E.R.D. - Lapdance
Enrique Iglesias - Escape

So you're right. No country legends here. ;D

They just got another 1.6 in the ratings i dont about you but i think they are going to flip soon because the country thing is obviously not working!

I hope they do flip, and if they don't flip to classic rock, which I doubt they would, they should go 70's, 80's and 90's. It really wouldn't be an oldies type format, but give the audience that grew up in those decades something to rock and jam to. :)

Star 96.9/102.9 did a good job but they didn't open up the playlist like they should have. Hearing Tears for Fears and Simple Minds over and over again didn't peak the interest, there were a ton of good 80's tunes that were never played. They didn't give it long enough to thrive. ::)

Anything would be better than the chicken.

Or here's another idea: Put that 70's-80's-90's format on 100.7 (The River's 3rd incarnation), and bring back the legendary 106.1 RDU. That would be interesting to see: in that scenario, 100.7 (which was formerly oldies) and 102.9 (which was formerly 70's and 80's) would have swapped formats ;D

It is apparent with the "****-a-doodle-do's 1.6 rating that the majority of the masses do not want to hear a Charlotte-fed satellite country music with voicetracked DJ's. I don't think anyone has a live/local airshift?

WQDR has been the triangle's country music leader for 23 years and counting. The formula for their success ain't hard folks. It doesn't take much thinking to figure it out. They are live and local pretty much 24-7. The DJ's have been there awhile and are constantly out in the community doing live remotes, fundraisers (recently the NC children's hospital) and other events geared to listeners who need help. I don't have a dog in the fight at QDR but that is a hell of a radio station.

The rootster will never catch/surpass WQDR so CC just as well change formats and quit embarrassing themselves. And it's apparent that the "legends" are just becoming that with little or no airplay. The changing of formats last October was the dumbest thing ever in Raleigh radio, even worse that WQDR going from rock to country in 1984.

EQR Fan...

They have 2 live shifts. Midday and Afternoon. I agree about not having much of a shot vs QDR. CC has never been good at taking down heritage stations in NC (ex. GBT vs KZL/JMH in Gboro) They won't throw enough money or time into it.

From the sound of it, you should change your name to "947 WQDR Fan" - lol. But I don't get how you're tootin the QDR horn so much but then say that the 84 flip to Country was dumb. Maybe I missed something...

As I previously said, I don't have a dog in the fight with WQDR, but they do it the right way. :)

IMO, the country format on 106.1 is a waste on a big signal. I'm sure another format could be put to good use on it, only if CC does it the right way. And regarding the 84 flip to country, I don't think it was dumb, I thought WRDU's flip to country was dumb. There are far too many country stations in the central/eastern Carolina markets, I can list at least 8 stations that are within earshot of Raleigh to the coast and from the Va. to S.C. border. One can only hear Toby Keith and Tim McGraw so much. ::)

Its not about beating QDR, but rather taking 3-5points away to help G105.

Rooster needs to be given at least 24 months to catch. AND it needs A LOT of marketing.

By marketing, do you mean "This is the station where you can listen to John Boy & Billy"? ;D

If The Rooster thinks they can keep doing what they're doing and take over QDR, they're being a little too...well...cocky.

(Okay, that was 2/3 of a pun...P-U!) :p

We have all ignored the real problem for years - too may stations moved from their original markets into the larger metro markers nearby.

When station cared about their own hometowns, they enjoyed success. But, when the big companies bought all the good FM signals and moved them into the largest city of the metro, the ended up fragmenting formats to the point that no one could enjoy any success.

Here is what I believe to be the real truth - bigger (marketwise) is not always better. Be content to super serve your market, make lost of money and enjoy life - or move to a bigger pond and be a small fish that it always at the bottom of the food chain!

I'd rather big the big fish in the small pond any day!

And the owners that moved them have made their money and slipped happily into retirement...while the current owners are left wondering how they're going to justify the bucks they paid for the stations.

Later....
