What is Touch 106.1? Is it a real station( FCC approve) ? A friend told me that he pick up this station driving in Boston . I cant get it south of Boston ( to close to Hot 106 Providence ) .

Yes, I heard a pirate on 870 around Quincy/Braintree the other day playing soft rock. More than a few
foreign language pirates including 1580, 1620, 1690; sometimes 89.3 used to have a station up
here north of Boston. Oh, and there was something on 98.9 that sounded like a pirate.

Some pirates come complete with request lines given out on air, websites, etc.

oh--hello, FCC? (note: logo on site has the letters "LP" in the corner. I didn't know there was an
LPFM license granted to 106.1 FM in Boston...hmm.)

http://touchfm.org

"Launch party Dec 31" The site says they were selling tickets for $50.

[EDIT-TOS Violation]

The only licensed WTCH is "Moose COuntry 960" WTCH-AM Shawano Michigan, a 1KW fulltimer.

Yup--I was curious and checked that (radio-locator) too. And I saw the "lauch" mis-spelling.
They did put that "LP" in their logo but I'm pretty sure there's no LPFM lic. to Boston on that freq!
106.1 has been a fave pirate location over the years including the orig. version of Allston-Brighton
Free Radio, Radio Free Allston.

Here something from my mailbox ( Touch106.1 event ) THE COLOR OF THE CROSS FILM SCREENING

Plus 88.5 (Caribbean/Haitian) has a strong signal from Boston's inner city somewhere, and also in the Cambridge/Somerville area the old "Radio Free Cambridge" transmitter still comes on the air occasionally with eclectic stuff from someone's house (it's no longer in the Zeitgeist art gallery it used to be in).

89.3 still has a number of different pirates from time to time in different areas despite U. Mass Dartmouth's WUMD now there with 10 kW in southeastern MA.

91.3 has a very strong, overmodulating Caribbean pirate from the Boston inner city making a mess of 91.5 WMFO's weak signal anywhere more than a couple of miles south of the Tufts campus. I've alerted their management who are trying to get the FCC on them.

96.5 has a Caribbean/Reggae pirate in Dorchester and reportedly another in Brockton.

98.9 has had a pirate (Haitian?) from somewhere in the city off and on for awhile now.

I heard one on 99.7 recently playing black Gospel music.

102.1 and 102.9 are still cranking out Caribbean and R&B from the Dorchester/Mattapan areas.

105.3 has been Caribbean/Reggae from urban Boston for quite a while.

Haven't heard the 106.1 one yet.

On AM, I've heard pirates recently on 720, 870, 990, 1580, and all over the X-band.

Unless they're broadcasting at flea power (1 milliwatt I think?), they're in violation of the law (though many
pirates live on because the FCC doesn't get complaints about them. When Radio Free Allston did a fairly
large signal at 106.1, complaints were filed by WROR and WCOD, IIRC...

Pirates may serve the community with stuff they may not get elsewhere but the FCC's around to protect legit
stations. Imagine if you like to listen to, say, WMFO 91.5 a town or so away from the Tufts campus
and someone decides 91.3 would be a swell place to put an illegal signal on...

Oh yeah, that 720 one can reach the North Shore (Beverly) at times! From Dorchester I think. Forgot about them!

Right--those were two I heard as I drove to the Cape this weekend, as I was heading through those
areas.

As I posted, that's already happening. The overmodulating 91.3 in urban Boston is splattering all over WMFO in Somerville and Cambridge.

That proves it's obviously illegal. Licensed LPFM's are supposed to be non-commercial. They can't solicit or air advertising.

Yes it's funny that I used that as an example for a "what if" and as I was typing it, your post came in,
saying that yes it IS happening with a station affecting WMFO!

A few yrs ago a co-worker of mine who lives in Methuen complained to the FCC because a pirate up his way was
on at 88.1, blocking WMBR (he likes Lost and Found; don't know if that newer NPR/NHPR signal
at 88.3 causes him trouble, but at least they're legitimate). A short time later the pirate was gone.
(My co-worker, not being one to indulge in the Net, either called or wrote them.)

Legal Part 15 on AM is 100 milliwatts. Legal Part 15 on FM is 250mv/3 meters... or, about a useable signal distance of no more then 1000 feet.

What were the pirates on 720, 870 and 990 running? The AM pirates must be running some decent power...... where are their antennas/towers located?

Good point! Though I don't know if they were running ads on the air; that $50 admittance fee I mentioned
was from an ad on their site. But that's prob illegal too.

The pirate Radio Free Vermont (Rutland, 96.5) used to give out an address on Post Rd. in Rutland Town,
and maybe a phone number, saying they were soliticing ads and PSAs, and I wound up hearing both
on that station. (Now gone but I have a couple C120s of them)

720 was foreign, maybe Haitian?
870--sounded like it was playing best of Laura Branigan on Sat morning and best of James Taylor on Sunday!

The antennas that all of the AM stations I've seen are running are antennas used for TIS stations. You'll see an example of this on the portable trailors that are still sitting in th median strips at the Braintree split and at 128/95 in Canton. Who knows what they're running for transmitters/power. I just get close enough to find the antennas. I've found close to 40 stations now in Eastern MA and RI.

Do you have any info on the 99.9 FM pirate in Lawrence?

I remember seeing a sign for "WKNM 1570" when I was in Lowell years ago. It was a very prominent sign on the corner of a busy street.... I wonder how much power they're running??
