I hear ya! Here in New Britain, CT, I have a local pirate on 87.9 FM. It's way too overmodulated and all I hear is Spanish religion, or whatever you want to call it. The frequency they're using is one notable. Two, we have LEGAL broadcaster WESU-FM 88.1 from Middletown's Wesleyan University. They're all but wiped out where I live. Three, I've noticed background noise when the TV in my room is on cable channel 6 (yes, I'm aware of channel 6 being between 82 to 88 FM). Lastly, if I move my wire antenna the right (wrong?) way, they start to interfere a bit with WFCR-FM 88.5 of Amherst, MA (when WFCR comes in anyways). Would an e-mail to the FCC even matter at this point?
It seems like the pirate is less than a mile from you if it's that strong. I might have barely picked it up all the way in Meriden, so it's got some serious juice. I'd suggest going to WESU personally and tell the general manager that you're a big fan of the station (college stations love that) and you can't pick it up at home because of the pirate station. You might even be able to pick up the pirate at Middletown.
Since the pirate signal is very strong in your area, you probably can find the transmitter just by walking around towards where the signal is strongest. You may find an FM antenna (it's going to be straight and vertical, with only 1 element). That will be most likely the pirate station. Wrap a kite up in aluminum foil and fly it into the antenna, and try to make the foil directly touch the antenna. That will increase the SWR of the antenna, and the transmitter will hopefully overheat and burn out. Who's the pirate going to complain to?
