106.3 FM in the Bronx/Yonkers area?

While riding up I-87 North this afternoon/evening, I tuned my Panasonic AM/FM/CD "Walkman" to 106.3 FM. From the Exits for I-95/US 1 (GW Bridge) north into Yonkers, I heard a station which seemed to be running nothing but advertisements for nightclubs, hair care products and whatnot. It was all with a Jamaican flavor to it. It started fading away about a mile into Yonkers near the Raceway. It then briefly popped back in around mile 7 in the Ardsley area. I figure this had to be a pirate because WFAF-FM 106.3 of Mount Kisco, NY fought it out with this station and eventully won, of course. Any ideas here? (I live in central Connecticut and can't get either of those stations here.) ???

That's definitely a pirate. 106.3 WFAF should've been coming in there the whole time. It wouldn't be G-Rock so yes..another Carribean/Jamaican pirate out of how many again? [EDIT] These individuals prolly know the FCC won't be banging on their doors anytime soon.

[EDIT-inflammatory]

I hear ya! Here in New Britain, CT, I have a local pirate on 87.9 FM. It's way too overmodulated and all I hear is Spanish religion, or whatever you want to call it. The frequency they're using is one notable. Two, we have LEGAL broadcaster WESU-FM 88.1 from Middletown's Wesleyan University. They're all but wiped out where I live. Three, I've noticed background noise when the TV in my room is on cable channel 6 (yes, I'm aware of channel 6 being between 82 to 88 FM). Lastly, if I move my wire antenna the right (wrong?) way, they start to interfere a bit with WFCR-FM 88.5 of Amherst, MA (when WFCR comes in anyways). Would an e-mail to the FCC even matter at this point?

Prolly not. There's a better chance of action being taken if the stations themselves complained. Well I'm not saying all Carribeans/Jamaicans/Spanish people are criminals, you gotta admit there is a consistent pattern here. From Boston through New England to NYC all the way to Florida, it's all the same for the most part.

It seems like the pirate is less than a mile from you if it's that strong. I might have barely picked it up all the way in Meriden, so it's got some serious juice. I'd suggest going to WESU personally and tell the general manager that you're a big fan of the station (college stations love that) and you can't pick it up at home because of the pirate station. You might even be able to pick up the pirate at Middletown.

Since the pirate signal is very strong in your area, you probably can find the transmitter just by walking around towards where the signal is strongest. You may find an FM antenna (it's going to be straight and vertical, with only 1 element). That will be most likely the pirate station. Wrap a kite up in aluminum foil and fly it into the antenna, and try to make the foil directly touch the antenna. That will increase the SWR of the antenna, and the transmitter will hopefully overheat and burn out. Who's the pirate going to complain to?

My thoughts exactly, contact WESU's General Manager Ben Michael (his e-mail is at http://www.wesufm.org) or the current Technical Director of the station. Ben is a non-student, so now that school is out for the year, he should be easier to contact. If they contact the FCC directly, it should have more of a response as the FCC tends to listen to licensed broadcasters when they complain of interference problems, and speaking of which, the 87.9 station doesn't really go too far beyond the New Britain border (a little into Berlin and Newington) and there is no trace in Middletown, so if no one says anything to WESU, they will never know. I think I might also contact them at some point (depending on what little free time I have) and let them know as well. Here's an idea, when you talk to them, make sure they know they should also bring in the engineering consultant (assuming they still have one) to help on this.
