106.3 In Santa Barbara Flips

I haven't been to Santa Barbara in a while, but I recall KMGQ, Magic 106, was basically a "safe AC" with specialty jazz shows in the evening. Or, did they go to an all smooth jazz format sometime ago?

Classic rock? The Surf? I don't make the connection between surfing and classic rock but maybe that's because in LA, "the surf" was a soft AC way back in the 80's and "the wave" is soft/smooth AC/Jazz today. Then again, KTYD calls itself "The Tide". So now it's "The Surf" vs. "The Tide"?

Anyway, it's about time KTYD got some competition. I think KTYD calls themselves World Class Rock (often used for AAA's) but they have been much more of a Classic Rock station.

When I went to UCSB (1983-1987), and on subsequent visits two or three years afterwards, KMGQ started as a AC with a "Smooth Jazz" program at night, then eventually went all Smooth Jazz.

In the mid-90's, they played with a couple of other formats (including Country for a couple of years) before going back to Smooth Jazz....

This would make sense since the Octopus 95.9 in Ventura flipped format from Classic Rock to 80's and 90's......Its now called 95.9 the Rewind......

Yeah, I did not make the connection before but now that you mention it, the Octopus left a hole when it left classic rock, so KMGQ jumped on it. It was a small hole though as the Octopus wasn't getting much in the way of ratings when it flipped. Is 106.3 a strong enough signal to pull in the Ventura listeners or will they just tune to the Tide and KLOS anyway?

My experience with 106.3 has shown the signal has issues in the Santa Barbara area; I am not sure of the power, but last I recall it was less than 1kw.

In some parts around Ventura the Orange County 106.3 jumps in every so often.

So I would imagine this format hole will be filled to serve more Santa Barbara than Ventura.

As I recall 95.9 was mostly canned; I am not sure what plans are in store for 106.3. The other classic rock/AOR station in town, KTYD, after being released from the grips of Clear Channel, returned to a very local oriented-feeling station with strong local on-air personalities and a strong presence in the community. Point-in-case, during the fires up there KTYD was pretty much the only radio station to go with wall-to-wall coverage.

I say this as if this new 106.3 is looking to make inroads in that market they have bit of a battle.

Oh...maybe they could sneak in a few Ventures classics or Surfaris or even Miserlou?? :D
