106.3 KAGM now 106.3 TALK FM

Dumb. Call letters are not only good but important. Not only that but the station is only 3-4 months old. Don't confuse people by changing the slug/positioning statement.

IMHO call it "THE VOICE OF NEW MEXICO, SUPERTALK 106.3 KAGM" - that says it all, freq, calls and what the station does. Simple. OR "106.3 KAGM, Albuquerque's Talk Station". So what if someone else is using it. Ascription can be a postive.
Edited by bigwoody on 07/06/05 11:50 PM.

Unless they're very familiar and/or have some name brand staying power, call letters are a pretty mediocre way to image a station. They're WAY down on Joe Listener's priority. Given that very few people probably have ever even heard of American General Media, that wasn't a very good brand name to begin with. However, I have to agree with you that it's kind of comical that AGM went through all those hoops to get the KAGM calls from Colorado only to, for the most part, jettison them after just a few months. I also have to agree with you that the "Talk FM" positioner is pretty dumb, especially considering they have an AM simulcast in Santa Fe. The website refers to it as "1260 AM Talk FM." YUCK!

If someone else is using it, especially if that someone is KOB, you don't want people to write that slogan down or to write down "KOB-FM" when they're listening to you. I like the idea of doing something to differentiate itself, though my favorite talk station name, 94.7 Jaws FM, was a terrible disaster! Of course, I also can't figure out how a station named after the source of constant irritation for New Mexico commuters could be so successful. However, The Big I seems to be doing just fine.

LOL. (of course) the beauty of it is that every other radio
and television station mentions the name of your station (Big I)
whether they want to or not; if anything it has to be a minor
irritation to them..

It was brilliant.

1260 AM Talk FM is now 1260 Talk AM

They now changed the website to say "1260 Talk AM" - is that really an improvement?

I'd say it's an improvement. How much of an improvement I'm not sure, though.
