WSBZ The Seabreeze --in part of our upcoming Seabreeze Jazz Festival --- has made arrangements to present the winners of the 2011 Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards. As you remember, the awards show was cancelled in early March in San Diego, CA for lack of ticket sales, though over 60,000 fans participated in the voting in 19 categories during the month of February. The message to the entire industry (artists, fans, and radio) was that smooth jazz was a "failure" and non-sustainable. And that the many fans, and musicians who create this music were indeed part of the reason for the "failure".
My wife Renee' and I (owners of WSBZ) felt this was non-acceptable and something needed to be done. We contacted the promoters of the defunct event and found out the trophy's were created, shipped to San Diego for the awards presentation, and returned to the trophy company for non-payment. And next week, they were scheduled to be destroyed. We decided yesterday to pay the money due ($5600) on the trophy's, and with a signed release from the promoter, we are moving forward with the presentation of the Oasis Contemporary Jazz Awards next Saturday April 16th at 7:30pm at the Seabreeze Jazz Festival. The event will be held at the Pier Park Amphitheater in Panama City Beach, FL. As unfortunate as the cancellation of the awards show was with anger and disappointment everywhere -- there needed to be a resolution for the fans who voted. We will announce and present the awards and hopefully put a "positive spin" on the smooth jazz format. Our event will be the best ever with George Benson, Boney James, Brian Culbertson, Norman Brown, Candy Dulfer, Peter White, Gerald Albright, and others set to present a great four days of smooth jazz -- showing the format is not only alive and well, but a vibrant force that fans DO embrace when artists produce quality music and radio stations actually choose to play it.

Anything you can do to help spread the word on this...would be greatly appreciated. We're looking forward to a great event.
