106.3 WSPA-FM dead air

This is a common occurrence it seems. Stereo carrier is on, but radio silence on 106.3 FM for at least 24+ hours. Several months and earlier this year (at least once), the signal was off the air completely. Not sure what their issues are.

Anyone know where the station is based as far as studios? Is this something pumped in from a thousand miles away or is it local?

I had to dig, but supposedly there’s a location or office for Norsan Media off Villa Rd in Greenville at the 291 interchange of 385. I’ve always been under the impression 106.3 was being fed from Charlotte. Not sure about 102.9/105.7/910 although “Kaliente” is one of their formats like “La Raza”.

Honestly, I had no idea until last week 910/105.7 in Spartanburg and 101.1 HD2 and 102.9 in Greenville had started simulcasting as Kaliente.

Ah I see it now. The contact us dropdown kinda blocks the addresses on my phone.

106.3 is still off the air as of this evening, RDS and stereo but still dead air. I did try to let them know but no response
is the RDS stuck or is it continually updating?

You know, I used to try to contact radio stations/companies when stuff like this happens. I ALWAYS did it when it was the company I worked for. But now? F-'em. If they don't give a rat's ass, then neither do I. Every company should have some type of alert on all of their signals.

Years ago, it was easy. An alarm would go off in the building and whoever was there either took care of it or alerted the engineer. Now, there are no people in the building. Hell, there's probably no building! And few have a dedicated engineer. So, if they don't care, I don't care.

The only people who get screwed are the advertisers. Some log somewhere generates a list of when the commercial airs, but it doesn't really know if the station is actually on the air. I've heard EAS tones go off in the middle of spots. Did the advertiser get credit for that one? I'm betting not.

My former industry is in exceptionally terrible shape.

I only made an attempt because some on here will ASAP ask if you contacted the station if you observe it’s off the air.

Didn’t know it was my job to monitor their signal. Generally, as in this case, I’m just pointing out or curious what’s going on.

I'm sorry. I was not being critical of you at all. I was just being a crotchety old radio guy. 🙂 Many apologies!

Oh, no worries, I know. I understood what you were saying 🤣 I just wanted to point out I shot them an email out of courtesy before all of the “have you tried contacting the station?” comments I see around these boards started coming in… when it’s honestly not my job to let them or any station know their own signal is off the air.

Back on the air. I wonder if somebody from Norsan saw these posts or the video 🤣

Is this station an LMA? I just wondered because sometimes there is a disconnect between the station owner and the renter on the maintenance/repair issues.

Nope, it’s owned and operated by Norsan Media out of Charlotte. I can’t check their other stations in the market due to the signals not reaching my area (910 WOLI, 105.7 W289BS, 102.9 W275BJ) but WROQ-HD2 (leased) which feeds W275BJ is running Kaliente programming as usual. Sister station 106.1 WOLS which is also owned and operated by Norsan in Charlotte is on the air.

Paging Mr. Sanchez…
