106.3

Why isn't 106.3 a full Tampa signal? It is not doing much of anything except running a syndicated 50s/60s feed from New York with Scott Shannon, 24/7. It is not serving any particular specialty for the people of Tarpon Springs. If that pig could be upgraded, the current owners would make a killing by selling it.

Cant upgrade it. You have a 106.5 in Palmetto. (Sarasota) TX is in Palmetto. It is already a Tampa Rimshot. Just wait till it goes HD, you wont hear 106.3 at all anymore in metro Tampa. Wish I could hear it here in Sarasota. We need that program niche filled here.

I listened to it on the way back from Ocala last wknd... Not too bad.. music... but Scott Shannon all the time ??? I got tired of him in just over half an hour... I'd rather keep 107.9 Oldies 108 anyday....

although I did hear Denny Bateman of their sister station 860 WGUL doing a promo on the air...

WGUL is no longer a sister station. 860 was sold off to Salem is now a joke of a conservative talk station. Bateman was kept for production duties at 106.3. I suspect that's why you heard his voice.

In 1998 there was an incredible engineering feat. 106.3 was licensed to Holiday. Tower in Port Richey. 97.1 was licensed to Beverly Hills. My company's owners (WLVU) were involved in a ten year upgrade project. Not only did we have to find a tower site, we also swapped frequencies. 97.1 was then Holiday and 106.3 Beverly hills. Since then, the new owners of 106.3
have been granted upgrades and have moved the tower site closer to the marketplace.

There are several low power FM applications (including at least one for Hillsborough County Government) in the Tampa area. If any of these licenses are granted, you'll probably not hear WJQB at all. I was still in Florida after the upgrade and with a good Alpine car radio, I could hear 106.3 to downtown Tampa (106.5, which I could also hear in Lutz, was starting to dominate by then). The only way WJQB could further upgrade is if there's an open frequency that would allow their still serving Berverly Hills or, changing the city of license. I think both are unlikely.

I have listened to them online, I don't mind the music, but the Scott Shannon liners get old after awhile. I think, toe-to-toe, 107.9 WSRZ is the better station and so the question is whether they can upgrade or would want to upgrade, to push a little more of their signal into Tampa-St. Pete.

They found a nice nich here. Although of late, it seems as if they are playing "newer" oldies and have dropped some of the vintage product. Agree too that although he is entertaining, Shannon does wear on a 24 hour basis. Also, the audio really needs some attention. However, Music of Your Life for the new generation of "old" people is a nich. Personally, love what we did at the old WHBO with Scotty, Boswell, Howard Hewes, and crew. Huge playlist and lots of format freedom.

Ooooops. Sorry Laurence. Jeff was a part of HBO back in the day as well.
Love the "Frank Shannon Plays The Originals" jingle shout.

If you have any of that stuff can you upload it Frank? THAT was a really fun station..fun to listen to, fun to work at. Here's an upload link if you want to allow us to hear it..I'll make it available.

Those shouts were Janet Meeker, and myself..tracked 6 times..actually matched the jingles well!

Jeff: Didn't know that Jan did the shouts with you. Thanks for the link, however, I'll have to dig up any material I may still have. Also, Boswell and I stay in touch and I'll check to see what he has.

Boz says he has some HBO skims on cassette. May be a trick to upload, however, he said he will do his best.
