106.5 KAY-DUBYA-OHH-DEE (v3.0)?

I noticed something last Friday, on a promo for Adam Carolla's new show... The positioner changed from KWOD V2.0 to K-W-O-D 106-5.... Thought nothing of it until I heard it a few more times over the weekend, then something struck me...

Format Flip?

Sounds more like a moderate tweak to me, but in a nutshell:

1. KWOD fires its airstaff and retools as KWOD V2.0. Radio Without Rules. to compete with the older-skewing Howard, giving people a "lighter" option.

2. KWOD hires a mediocre airstaff and proceeds to use the voice of their PD for all of their imaging, which well over 3/4 of the sweepers refer to an IPOD.

3. Howard Flops into Jack. KWOD finally gets a real imaging voice and kills the IPOD schtick

4. Some of KWOD's jocks mature into their position. Some others seem to be better suited for Radio Disney.

5. KWOD moves more towards the old Howard, adding Carolla to get some of the disenfranchised Stern listeners, and "playing the best alternative from the last three decades." Heck if they add a song from the Police once an hour, they'd pretty much be the old Howard. Which maybe isn't a bad thing.

6. In the end, the new K-W-O-D sounds more and more like the old KWOD.

Jim, Hill, Good job. The listeners of Sacramento appreciate it. Keep up the good work.

Agreed, KWOD does sound more like the old kwod, KWOD of the early to mid 90's. In my opinion that is about the best thing they could do. KWOD sounds better now than they have in almost 10 years. They are more of a true alternative as they were before the term alternative was really even used for the format. KWOD was one of the earliest alternative stations in the country, years before it became the mainstrean un-alternative format. I am sure it will never be completly as it was (truly alternative), but they are doing a better job at staying true to their roots than any other alternative station I know of. However, I may be wrong... WFNX in Boston does fairly well also, but I prefer KWOD.

What is most amazing to me is that I always though ED Stolz ran a great sounding station, but towards the end it was fading. Now a large coporation like Entercom has actually taken a locally owned/opperated station and improved it. Even if it took them a few years to fine tune and get it right. This is a first in my book.

By the way, nobody has mentioned it yet, but I listened to Jeremy quite a bit. I really don't think they made the best decision of people to get rid of! I don't know if I've heard anyone on that station that knows more about the music that they're playing than him. He had some unique talent.
