106.5 KMMT and Fresno

I was just in Fresno today and I noticed there was a station on 106.5 FM (KMMT). What surprised me was that they broadcast from Mammoth Lakes, east of the Sierras. It was interesting receiving them in Fresno, especially when I looked at the coverage map after coming back from Fresno. It seems that the signal shouldn't even be able to make it to the Central Valley. I guess it does though, especially when they mention their city of license at the top of the hour ("Mammoth, parts of Fresno"). Does anyone know if people in Fresno really listen to them or not? Are there any other examples of an FM station mentioning a city that they're broadcasting to that's not even close signal-wise?

KMMT 106.5 comes in great in Clovis, because of there transmitter on top of Mammoth Mountain at near 10,000 ft. I've listen it for years, it was a little hard to get when KPWR 106.3 was on the air, they used to be at 106.3 in the 80s, they do have a interesting triple A format, back then in the 80s and 90s they would have a all request Classic Rock format on Friday nights which I have called and they played my request within 10 minutes. It's a good ALTERNATIVE to listen to.

Is it possible to receive well on a home radio? I was using my cellphone/fm radio to listen and it was able to receive KMMT in south downtown Fresno. However there was a fair amount of static. Maybe in certain parts, the signal is really clear but I'm not sure. I guess the situation with KMMT is similar to KWYL 102.9 from Reno. The signal is also on a 10,000 foot peak and puts out a signal over the Sierras towards the Sacramento Valley. There are parts of the Central Valley where 102.9 comes in really clear.

Yes I can get KMMT on my home stereo in Fresno/Clovis, If you look at a map of the Sierras between Mammoth Mt. and Fresno/Clovis you can see a clear narrow path between, in the San Joaquin River alinement, If you go north to Madera you lose it, same going south of Fresno.

Who really cares about the signal since it streams online?

I guess I'm one of those people, and there are others as well that care. Not everyone listens to radio online. I don't listen online unless I have no other way to listen to the station. Ask all the people in the DX and Reception section, see if they care. A lot of the dxers talk about the signals, even though many of those stations are streaming too. It's a hobby for some people and a passing interest for others. If you don't care, fine then, but I do care and so do other people.

I totally agree with MR5229 I'm a DXer, It's one of my hobbys to my best FM catch is 95.5 KLOS, and even though I can go to their stream it's great picking them up over 200 miles away, and another thing on local stations and KMMT it sounds better on my stereo than the Streams(At least for me anyway) so Isycool7227 Radio-info is more about OTA radio than internet radio.

I hadn't heard about this station, but this discussion prompted me to check out the stream. The audio quality is pretty lame. Compressed & bandwidth-limited on the stereo. I'm way out of their coverage area, but if I could pick up the over-the-air signal it would probably be cranked up at times in this house.

Any station that does "pet patrol" reports can't be all bad. They're becoming a little too polished... In the days, they were really a kick to listen to. Snowboarding by day/jocks by night.

Not bad for a mere 360 watts!! ;) But seriously, at nearly 11,000 ft that has to be the highest FM site in CA. Albuquerque and Salt Lake City have tower farms at similiar elevations.

My 1st thought was how hard the transmitter would be to maintain in the winter. But from what I can tell, it looks like the transmitter is at the top of the ski lift. Now - that's my kind of transmitter site!

I would think if the transmitter was on a peak facing the Central Valley, the coverage would be outstanding. However those peaks are so tough to reach, it would be a near-impossible task of maintaining a transmitter. I think Fresno is the one of the only major cities in the USA where there could be a transmitter with a 10,000 foot elevation difference between transmitter and coverage area. Portland would be in that category too, but no one would want to build a transmitter on Mount Hood, a dormant volcano! Las Vegas also, with Mount Charleston being nearly 11,000 feet above sea level and the Las Vegas Valley being 2,000 feet in elevation with a 9,000 foot difference between mountain and valley.

Oh yeah, I totally understand about trying to catch signals. I just don't think many people care to do it. Lots of radios are just crap these days for trying to do that sort of thing.

Lots still care... and I find most of the car stereos these days have EXCELLENT tuners in them. I've caught 95.5 KLOS in Tulare... and on occasion can catch 106.1 KMEL in Fresno in my car.

You got that right just recently I got KTHU 100.7 The Thunder Classic Rock from Chico driving in Fresno, another was a while ago was Alice 97.3 from SF , I have a Pioneer Super Tuner including KMMT ,Ive recieved KZOZ 93.3 from SLO, KMAX 96.5 Bakersfield, 104.5 from Acasadero, as well as 92.5 from Paso Robles, also 103.9 KDJK Mariposa north or Clovis, that station used to come in all the time at home before 103.7 added HD, 92.5 KBRE at Sky Harbor along with 98.3 from Modesto, there alot more from Sky Harbor at the point in the road right above Millerton lake. In Bakersfield 94.l1, 98.5 as well .

I love those Pioneer stereos too!!! They are truly the best!!! I got 105.7 KOZZ Reno from the Chukchansi parking lot one night.

Yes Pioneer has the best car stereo, I've had others in the past, Pioneer has the best Adjacent channel separation, even when KVPR 106.3 was on the air ,in the car KMMT 106.5 driving around Fresno/Clovis came in fine, actually driving in north and west of Fresno KHAN 106.3 from Merced comes in.

That adjacent channel seperation is called "Selectivity." 80dB is the best. There are other brands that have ratings of 75dB (not as good)
Sony and Panasonic. I have a Panasonic in two of our company trucks and the selectivity is lousy. I know Kenwood and Alpine have 80dB too, but, the "sensitivity" (ability to picking up weak signals) is not as good as Pioneer's. That is one reason why you can pick up Thunder 100.7 from Chico. ;D
