106.5

Anyone know what the story is with the mystery 106.5? It shows up pretty well around Poplar and White Station, and can be heard to nearly Mendenhall to the west, and I-240 to the east. Sounds like a pirate, as there are no ID's and what sounds like a re-broadcast of one of the more eclectic channels on XM or Sirius.

Also, there are what appear to be 4 FM bays on a mounted 1/2 way up a telephone pole adjacent to an office building on Poplar, just west of the library. Anyone know who those belong to? Inquiring minds want to know.

I was flipping the dial and hear the exact same thing! I could pick it up on Saturday at around 9 am on my way to Rock 103. I had heard on this board that someone could possibly be running something straight off the satellite through an fm station out east. It definitely was off satellite, ijust dont know which one. Because there were no commercials. Kinda sounded like the XM oldies channel.

There was a lenghty discussion about this earlier this year. No one could figure out the source including me. The main speculation was someone living in the area added a high power antenna to their satellite radio. The range does not go very far. When I was in the area, I heard Bluesville. I liked what I heard. About two and half miles later the signal was gone.
Edited by BigSteveG on 08/10/05 09:01 PM.

From what I understand, some of the XM radios will feed an FM signal that can go about a mile and a half (though mine covers my yard out to the street, and that's about it!). That very well may be what you're hearing.

As far as your antenna inquiry, are you talking about Poplar and Tillman? if so, that is the old 101.1 backup antenna from when they were in that office building as KWAM-FM.

That's the one...Not operational, eh? If they're missing a bay at some point, I had nothing to do with it...:)
