106.7 Audio Quality

Has anyone else noticed that i106 sounds very strange lately?

I'm not sure how long it has been going on, but I noticed yesterday that the audio sounds completely lifeless, and is on the quiet side. I don't have a very good ear for audio, and can't describe the issue very well, but it is significantly "off", especially if you compare them to 98.5 or 107.5.

I haven't listened to them in so long, that I haven't noticed.

I just came to this page to post about the same thing. I noticed it first thing yesterday. They sound like streaming internet at 56kbps. I listen to them over the river or party, but can't stand to listen for more than 2 seconds when the sound quality sounds like it does at the moment. They better get it fixed if they think they can compete with the river. I'd rather listen to static on 98.5 or 102.5 than what i106 sounds like today. I've noticed WSM-FM does the same thing sometimes.

NashvilleNative: You Are Amazing. As a listener listening for 2 seconds, you qualify for the exclusive and very dedicated "P1 listenership club" for Crutchuluss. Call in and collect your prize. In fact, with that kind of longevity listening you may qualify for the 1/10th of 1% listener called "VI P1". You get a chance to win the broken down (and hidden in the back of the studios) 106.7 The Fan Trucklike thingy for almost free*.

*subject to assuming the 288 monthly payments of $23,967 per month, back taxes, $17,000 for decals and paint job and $81,856 worth of unpaid mechanic liens. Mileage confirmed at 72 miles, one mile per day of the last format. Note: this vehicle is not equiped with a radio.

It appears they have resolved whatever issue they were having, as the audio sounds normal now (Sunday morning).

I have never thought they sounded quite as good as the other CHR stations (in terms of sound quality), particularly 107.5, but perhaps I am biased because their signal is rather wimpy as well.

Maybe they were swapping processors, or maybe they had a failure in their audio chain and they were making do to stay on the air. I seriously doubt whoever is doing the engineering is trying to make the station sound bad. Maybe he or she is having to work with what they have.

Okay, you know that 106.7 is in bad shape when they are losing out to 98.5! We don't even have a station on 98.5 in Nashville!

Hahaha, nice. (I assume most know we're talking WGIC out of Cookeville). Once again, I admit I enjoy i106 (when it's not Brittney Spears or Black Eyed Peas), so let's not be too critical of it - Cumulus might hear and change formats after 6 months instead of 9. I'd like to see i106 stick around, even though as I've mentioned before, "i106" on 106.7 WNFN is a dumb name. Hopefully they'll pick up some momentum.

Okay, well, I'm on the west side of Nashville (Bellevue-Pegram area to be exact), so I wouldn't be familiar with 98.5 from Cookeville, although I somewhat regularly listen to 98.7 from Hopkinsville.

I believe someone here once said that the "I" moniker was some kind of syndicated name; in other words, all similarly formatted (Crumbuless?) stations started with the "I" nickname, despite their actual call letters. As for their frequency name, in relation to their actual dial position? Not even I can explain that one away!

WGIC 98.5 puts out a good signal across the eastern fringes of the Nashville area (Lebanon, Murfreesboro, etc), often times better than WNFN in some parts.

Cumulus does have several "i###" stations, including WJLQ "i100" in Pensacola (which is 100.7 by the way), WRWM "i94" in Indianapolis (93.9), etc. I understand why they wouldn't want to round up to "i107" here in Nashville, as WRVW is 107.5, and listeners could easily turn to 107.5 when they think of 107.

Perhaps "i106.7" would have made sense, or some other slogan all together, but it's probably too late for that now.

I keep thinking their logo ought to be an interstate sign, but that would be more appropriate for a station playing country music for truck drivers. ("Truckin' down I-106!")

The other problem with an "i107" moniker is that it could conjure up memories of "Y107," at least among us old-timers. But among their teen audience (not old enough to remember Y-107), probably no big deal.

Digital frequencies are the only way to go now. (And my bad for my earlier message, the "i" in "i106" is lower case, not capitalized like I posted it earlier.)

Another mistake that i106 made, although a relatively minor one in this case, is that they sponsored a local 5K race in which I was in attendance, and even though they had their van there, they were not handing out any bumper stickers! What's the deal there? Do they not have any bumper stickers? Come to think of it, I haven't seen any i106 bumper stickers on anyone's cars around here!

If they had had any brains, they would have gone ahead and called i106 "the new" Y-107. Would have made for a more intense war*. The River is a nice name for what 107.5 started out as, Hot AC, after dumping the Y-107 moniker, but it's kinda lame for today's format. Guess it doesn't matter and doesn't affect the ratings, though.

I actually thought they were Y-106 when I first heard the flip, etc. It was kind of hard to tell if
it was i or y, until I saw the logo.

* p.s. there is no war, obviously at this or any stage of the i-106 "game."

The company that owns the station doesnt have a clue.

Don't know if this means anything or not, but it seems like the letter "i" is THE hot letter now (iPad, iPod, iPhone, etc.), replacing the letter "e" which was the "hot" letter several years ago (e-mail, e-zine, etc.).
