106.7 Has the Most Variety...to Say the Least

I was listening to 106.7 a little while ago, and a few of the songs I heard were "Magnet & Steel" by Walter Egan, "Chuckie's In Love" by Rickie Lee Jones and "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" by Sugarloaf.

I know we all complain about tight playlists, but really? Are they trying to be some variation of a Jack format? Magnet & Steel is a nice song, but I'm guessing there's a reason I probably haven't heard it since the 70's. It's not exactly one of the all-time greats. Would any of those songs test well? I'm curious as to where 106.7's playlist is coming from.

On a related subject, is the station trying to copy the humorous sweepers on Star 94 and The Bull?

"Magnet & Steel" is pure cheese, but while most people won't admit it I think people like to listen to "oh wow" stuff occasionally, even the cheesy stuff.

Remember, some people actually grew up to this stuff (I remember the first tme I heard this song), and a timebound playlist wouldn't be complete without it.

please please please do not wish tighter playlists on atlanta radio stations! i love y'all, and merry christmas, but my 70s hit station 106.7 is the only station i can listen to that plays more than 12 songs. i love it. no, not all songs are great, i.e. 'muscrat love' by captain and tenille which, today, i'm sure wouldn't 'test' well. but i get a kick out of hearing it once in a while.

Nibblin' on bacon, chewin' on cheese...and don't forget the synthesized muskrats...

If you want a less-cheesy version, try America's version of the song.

Roddy, there is a reason. The difference between "oh, wow, I haven't heard THAT song in a long time" and "THAT song is one of my all time favorites and I love it" is huge. There's a big gap. 4 or 5 times hearing the "oh wow" song and the average listener realizes that they don't and never did really love it. "Magnet and Steel" is one of those songs. "Hot Child In The City", Nick Gilder. "Wouldn't It Be Good", Nik Kershaw. The list of songs like this is endless. But they test like crap. For a reason.

So, maybe on regular commercial radio, you include the "oh wow" songs maximum once per hour middays and nights, in a lengthy lunar rotation, to provide some breathing space for P1s who might be getting a bit tired of hearing the same thing over and over again. Then again, maybe you just don't ever play them!

This is strictly a matter of opinion, but I wouldn't call "Hot Child In The City" cheese. It's definitely period, though. A lot of late-70s songs with any hint of a disco beat or flourishes IMNSHO get a bad rap for being "disco" or "cheese". The result of the disco backlash, at the time, was the decimation of CHR in the early 80s with a bunch of anodyne AC stuff (Christopher Cross, et al.), at least until some of the MTV new-wave stuff started to get some traction. Now the MTV stuff is derided as "period", too.

Of course, a discussion like this inevitably devolves into the same old arguments..."good times and eight oldies"..."Nothin' but blues and Elvis, and somebody else's favorite songs"..."burn, freshen, repeat"..."we want bigger playlists"..."deep cuts don't test well"..."your favorite is someone else's cheese"..."The 'Jack' (etc.) format won't last..."'Stairway to Hotel Alabama' still tests great"..."we're radio, not your iPod"...

I'm joining this one late, but one thing: a good song is a good song, IMO. 94Q (now Star 94) broke a bunch of artists including being the first to play Christopher Cross "Ride Like The Wind" and all the rest of his hits. He acknowledged that with a show at the Atlanta Civic Center in 1980 done for 94Q, with all our jocks on stage--a nice night.

Fast forward: he's one of those artists who just...disappeared...but he was a really nice guy, from Austin Texas I think, and backstage couldn't have been more friendly, and jeez, I hope he saved some money!

That being said, "Sailing" is STILL a great song, even though you don't hear it anymore, anywhere. How many Grammy's did he win in 1981? 6?

Hey Roddy, thanks for the feedback my friend, and totally unrelated to this thread: I hope you have a GREAT holiday season, and THANK YOU for all you do to support radio. I mean that. Even though my new responsibilities with Cox include TV and newspaper plus radio, I have a real soft spot for a medium (radio) that's used by 90+% of the population weekly yet doesn't get enough respect. Plus, I KNOW when used right, it flat out KILLS for advertisers (I did the national Outback Steakhouse radio ads for 18 years--total success--but not just Outback in terms of success; consider Motel 6 "We'll leave the light on for you").

You among many of the ad buyers out there stand as someone everyone in the Atlanta radio industry should be thankful for. I know I am. Thanks, mate--please, please, keep believing--and keep up the good work! You're the best!!

I always heard that CC was as you describe. Some old show on MTV described CC as the epitome of the radio star killed by MTV video, but IIRC he DID continue to have AC success after MTV got big.

I do agree, for as big as he was at the time, he gets very little airplay today. Do the AC hits of the early 80s (think Air Supply or Ambrosia, maybe the Little River Band, along with CC) get the same stigma as the discoish stuff of the late 1970s?

Bringing this back to the original thread, it seems like a no-win situation for any kind of "oldies" format. You play old stuff, and some of it is inevitably going to sound period. But, isn't that the point to some extent--to put people back in time?

That's what I thought...Wasn't that part of the appeal of the glut of oldies stations that popped up in the mid-to-late 1980s?

Now..Now...!!!!!!!! I am a child of the 70`s. Some people would consider most of the 1970`s "cheese". Who gives a good f&ck? We don`t need a bunch of hacks and "radio police" bitching and moaning and taking about every song! Large playlists do the best!! Sure, they will play a song that you don`t like. Just hang tight and another one will be on in a couple of minutes!!! RELAX!!!!! No reason to be SO uptight!!! Enjoy the great Oldies!!!!
