106.7 Launch Date

I have heard the 17th (next Thurs.) or the 18th (next Fri.) from my friends at Cumulus. I have not received a final launching date yet. STAND BY! Lance Venta, on twitter, said he will record the flip and post it on formatchange.com. I am excited!
 
I wonder if, because of all the moving parts of a news operation, Cumulus would take a page from the restaurant business and do a "soft launch" in the wee hours with no stunting--just a hard cutover--and no promo until a couple days in.

I also wonder where 106.7 is going to send their disappointed AGH fans--Journey?

Stunting would seem to serve no purpose since there's no element of surprise here.
 
WNEW (DC) switched a few days early unannounced. They needed it. There were lots and lots of technical glitches the first week. To be honest, it really took them 60 days to get their act together. Now after six months they sound as polished as their big sister 1010 WINS.
 
I have met a lot of the news folks and they have made some good hires. It will be a first class operation. They have done wonders with the studio's at Interstate. Could be a soft launch!
 
Well, having listened to three news stations launch, I would really recommend a soft launch. Even as experienced and polished as CBS is, WNEW sounded TERRIBLE at launch. It continued to sound terrible for a couple of weeks... and that was even with broadcasting to nobody for two days before the launch.

So, it would be in their best interest to do a soft launch and work out the bugs. There are going to be many bugs. There is nothing worse than the dramatic intro at the top of the hour and the announcer's mic does not come on. We find out just how long the news music is. :)
 
Especially in a revamped studio. I hope they are already doing trial broadcasts in-house. But, we are talking about Cumulus, aren't we.

You expect them to be LIVE? First of all, you know how tight Atlanta Morning News is on WSB - so tight that it sounds pre-recorded. Now, I would venture to say that, even though it SOUNDS like a group of newscasters sitting at their respective mics waiting for a cue to do their thing live with no mistakes, it is not.

Imagine a group of newscasters recording their bits (with soundbytes), then dumping their finished bits onto the computer to be tightly edited into the program itself with a couple of live folks "gluing" it all together. It's all polished and ready to go to make a program that is VERY good. That's also why they can constantly promote themselves during the newscast.

(During the newscast, they are probably standing by - live, with coffee in hand - just in case something goes wrong and they can quickly pick it up.) Then, after the newscast, they can go home because they've been working all night. :D

The big difference is that WSB has up to 18 hours to prepare the next day's newscast while 106.7 News has to be constantly preparing and delivering it, so I expect the pace of 106.7 News to be much slower (but not as slow or in-depth as WABE/NPR) - which will be a welcome relief to me.

But they can do it - like CNN did against the "very prepared" newscasts of the major TV networks. It will be interesting to see how WYAY improves their product over time.
 
I just hope the Right Now Traffic reporters don't pull a Capinherbemory on their traffic reports and sound like this: there'sbuliduponthe75-85connectorjustnorthofhighway400dougturnbuuuuuuulnorthwest
 
Any ideas if their Smooth Jazz will remain on HD2? I hope so, I waited months for them to get their HD signal back up and have been enjoying it since it came back a few months ago. It's certainly different than their main HD1 simulcast of AGH and they are the ONLY HD2 station running something totally unique that isn't a either an offshoot of their main format or a simulcast of an AM signal.

I know, WSB is a mess when they do traffic, with all the disco music, and I loathe Cap'n Herb.......Mark Arum, they all talk way too fast.

Anyone remember when Atlanta's Morning News had live video on Comcast? It seems like it was after 9/11 by a year or so, but does anyone remebers the year more accurately?
I used to love watching that. It felt like I was there in the studio. I can imagine Scott and the crew resented it -- having to be "on" visually ("oh my nose itches...must not scatch... must ... not ... scratch").
The main shot was a side view of Scott Slade who would occassionaly look directly at the camera. Certainly looked like a group of newscasters sitting at their respective mics and doing their thing back then. Maybe they were just moving their mouths to their pre-recorded audio.

I know I miss Smooth Jazz 107.9. I listen to KTWV a lot.
 
I know that when WNEW went live in December, they just did not do much live stuff for the first couple of weeks. It was all they could handle to just keep the newscast running with copy. After the first couple of weeks they slowly started adding additional elements to the newscast. The live from the field folks did not happen until a couple of months after go-live.
 
Well, with all of the speculation about the date, I am hoping it is soon. I really do look forward to Atlanta having an all news station again. I am addicted to news radio. My iPhone keeps my addiction under control by allowing me to listen to WNEW (my favorite), WCBS, 1010 WINS, and WBBM. Sometimes I will listen to WTOP, but I think I like WNEW better. Maybe it is just the sounders.... yeah that must be it. WNEW has the best sounders in the country right now.
 
I wonder if Cumulus will keep 106.7's HD on? The time delay required to sync up the digital and analog will make remote reporters rely on a back channel audio feed where as with straight analog they can use a simple receiver and take their ques from the on air.
