106.7 Party Radio?

While scanning the dial earlier today, I stumbled across "Gypsy, Tramps, and Thieves" playing on 106.7. It was followed up by "Time in a Bottle". About an hour later, the same sequence was played. But the signal was weak. When I hit Houston, it was gone.

Tonight I went back, and there were live DJ's. They had a number for requests, and said the station was Party Radio - 106.7 Washington and 92.3 Canonsburg. (I flipped down to 92.3, but got nothing). The DJ's certainly weren't following FCC rules, as they were cussing left and right.

Right now the station sounds like it is back to a tape or feed - lots of oldies and no talk.

Any idea what this might be?

A pirate station in all likelihood. Probably some kids with a 50-watt or so transmitter and next to nothing for an antenna.

Used to see these all the time in FL, once the FCC finds them there's usually jail time involved.

I'd be cussing too if I had to hear Time in a Bottle twice in the same day. :D

I'll have to check this out during my drive today.

Would kids be playing music from the early '70s?

Well, who knows... but now that you mention it there were a couple of pirate stations in the Tampa area a few back that were run by older guys from their living rooms... in their case it was sort of a political anti-government-control statement on the main operator's part.

Still ended in jail time.... feds literally kicked in the doors and hauled out all the equipment...

I found their choice of frequencies humorous.

Sadly, it was silent this morning. But I'll listen next weekend to see if they come back.

Actually you'd be surprised how rarely jail time is involved. Almost never as far as I can find.
Usually a warning followed by fines which are rarely collected because the perps generally don't
have two nickels to rub together. Then there is always the fear that some judge will come down
on their side, as nearly happened in the Radio Free Berkeley case a decade ago. In most cases
they seize the transmitter and that takes care of the problem (see "don't have two nickels" above)
