106.7 sounds horrible

Maybe I'm picky, but is it just me or is 106.7 audio overdriven? I hear the compressors going into overload and breaking out into a whine at times. I have heard this on my car radio (Pioneer DEH-2900), my main home receiver (Pioneer SX1250), and old Sony ICF-2010. It sounds as if the high end above 10K is overly accentuated. Heard this on several songs and spots. It gets painful to listen to, so much so that I tune out after about an hour. I cannot stand it, it's about as WLTM's audio was. Am I the only one paying attention to this?

Compared to Magic 102.9 out of Gainesville (which has a much better playlist BTW), 106.7 sounds like the audio from a Ramsey kit. Seriously, it's that bad. 102.9's low bit Internet stream sounds better.

Last time I was over in Atlanta, it sounded like they were driving their composite clipping (or something) fairly hard. Citadel/ABC does a little light processing to their feed already, so 106.7's processing might be accentuating whatever True Oldies is doing.

Hey, they could sound a lot worse *cough*STAR94*cough*.

Majic 102.9 sounded great before they started up that #$^%&&@ translator near L5P.

This is the classic scenario where everything sounded great and then the Chief Engineer leaves. New CE, corporate stooge, will go in and think he/she knows better than the last guy and muck it all up.
Or the dreaded Program Director was playing with all the shiny knobs and found themselves deep in the weeds. I'd put my money on the new CE trying to prove something.

Dammit! I had to go to Walmart today and replace a pair of worn out white socks that I purchased in 1989!

This is funny..when you stop to consider the processsing we were listening to when these songs were originals! It was Top 40 radio and they were ALL crunched and processed so they could be the loudest. Plus, remember, when these songs were recorded the studio techniques were barbaric by comparison. I hear over-driven mics all the time on those old classics, even on Motown.

Once upon a time both 106.7 and 101.5 had Omnia'a with slightly different custom settings created on site by Frank Fotti, the guy who designed the box. Later they were tweaked by this old CE you speak of and the former ABCNY Chief twice after wards. I know some guys in the market who badly wanted the recipe I don't think any of them ever got it.
Not sure what is what now.

Yes times have changed at 210 Interstate North but come on play nice.

Actually, today it sounds as if the program delivery system is FUBAR. Isn't the satellite, Spiff n Fred were breaking up this morning. Initially on the old tower it had an analog Optimod, decent STL, and a clipper at the plant. Dunno what they put when they moved it, but it has not been reliable since the move. Worst case would be one of the data reduced digital links like the Moseley or a landline using data reduced paths.. normally APT-X coding. If you overdrive them to the point the samples become all ones, they come completely unstuck. I sort of suspect the thing is on a marginal path to begin with, and then it's overdome to the point of destruction.
Whatever's failed, it failed bad.
For a modest honorarium, I'll go fix it for them if the path can be made good. Otherwise, for heavy bux I'll go fix it for them so it stays fixed.

Is there an English translation to that?

106.7 was off the air last night around midnight. Oldies music replaced with a beating sound. What is being discussed may be why. Remember...they are operating on the cheap, so they may not have had an engineer within distance.

As for sound quality...it could use a few tweaks. It sometimes has a "canny" sound to it.

Also...don't they have a backup system if the satellite (or whatever other means) fails? I think it is digital satellite, as the audio often breaks up during heavy rains.

LOVE the station but the squeals and squeaks like a hamster on a wheel today sent me running down the dial. Hope they fix that soon!

I called in at 404-741-1067 and talked to the afternoon guy about 6 tonight, and he said they were having problems at the transmitter. All is well now though, and they actually sound even better than ever.

This is why I now farm and do the Radio Disney thing, I'll take a burned down barn, farm equipment melted to nothing or a stray monitor point anyday over the stress and BS that comes with FM Radio.

Wasn't working for ABC/Disney to Sh@tadel like watching your barn burn? Just painful to watch it all go up, your hard work on the processing and could do nothing to stop it. And god only know what else the new CE has messed up....Kicks sounds awful, True Oldies can't stay on the air...the whole place is ready to fail. I'm surprised that there hasn't been another Leap Day massacre or a mass exodus of the staff. It is obvious that Farid is only concerned about his bonus instead of producing a product he can be proud of.
I know I'd rather deal with farm equipment, bees, and the occasional Natel power module popping compared to the mess that is now Kicks and True Oldies.

MRFLASHPORT is exactly right. Heard the whine this morning around 8:20am. And another thing, sometimes you only hear one of the two stereo channels when my radio blends into mono, so something isn't wired right.

A damn shame. Did you buy them at Woolworth's, TG&Y, or Zayre? :D

It ran all yesterday and last night in a circumstance which ought to be total emnbarassment for its management. I'd be embarassed to be seen by any of my clients of I were selling for them. They need to go ahead and bankrupt and lkiquidate the chain, and let someone else buyt it at auction and give it a try.
