106.7 WYAY - Signal

So quick question for the techy geeks (no offense). I live in Carrollton and actually pick up 106.7 better than 97.1. This was the case prior to the all news format so the stereo vs mono is not the impact. 97.1 does come in but 106.7 comes in better yet 97.1 has a more powerful signal. I believe the towers are close to each other as well so location should not be an issue.

97.1 has 98,000 watts at 1586 feet above average terrain. 106.7 has 77,000 watts at 1661 feet above average terrain.

Actually 106.7 signal contour is closer to Carrollton than 97.1 but on FM, who else is on the dial with you has a lot to do with how far out the signal reaches.

97.1 is more open channel in that direction than 106.7 plus the terrain from their tower toward Carrollton may be helping them too...at least more so than the terrain between you and 106.7's tower. 106.7 and 104.7 are on the same tower. 104.7 is just 24,000 watts a few feet higher up than 106.7.

Carrollton has always been a bit of a strange place for reception. WKNG is weaker in Carrollton than WSB-AM. They are both 50kw and the WKNG transmitter is only a 20 or so miles from Carrollton.

I have even picked up AN106.7 in HD in Carrollton. Is Carrollton higher than the Six Flags ridge?

97.1 to Carrollton, IIRC that whole mess of high rises across the top end of I-285 would be in the way right at mid-path (the worst place to be) or close to it from the 97.1 site to you. I'd have to fire up some tools to look for sure, but that's probably why. From my site, reception is spotty over that way, either it's great or it's a no-go. Technically it's "over the hill" if you do the 4/3 earth chart on it. (The Fish and WYAY analog share the same physical Shively 6 bay, had to replace it the other year, thank you mister lighting *grumble*). There are some literally smokin' pix of it hehe. Hope that helps a bit.

CJ- I know your post was very informative but I have no clue what it meant. Way over my head. HAHA! I know Carrollton was built on a mountain but not sure if it's higher up than six flags hill. 97.1 and the high rises of Atlanta makes sense but 106.7 has to do the same thing and again, 106.7 comes in much more clear in Carrollton rather than 97.1. I've pulled 106.7 down to Twiggs County on the other side of Macon several times (not just one freak time).

The original poster may be thinking that 97.1 and 106.7 transmit from the same site. That is no longer true. 106.7 and 104.7 transmit from a site NE of Loganville, while 97.1 and 95.5 transmit from a site near Brasselton. There looks to be approx. 15 miles between them. The path to Carrollton would differ enough that one could have an obstruction (high rises, hills, etc.) and not the other.
