If Infinity decides to stunt 106.9 until it unveils its new station, What type of stunt should they do? Continuous 24/7 Howard Stern? How about Continuous Louie-Louie Songs? Or how about a Robotic Countdown?(10000,9999,9998,9997...) Or how about Continuous All Christmas Son..... oops, sorry about that one, KOIT-96.5 will be doing that soon. So what stunt would everyone would like to hear?

> Good idea. My stunt suggestion probably would not be practical but I would do a mock/faux stunt of recreating KMPX on 106.9. Playing Big Band music like they used to before the big switch of 1976(KCBS-FM,KEAR and KMPX). Make it sound like they switched back to KMPX and turned back the calender to 1976! By the way, It would be neat if Infinity would acquire the KMPX calls and put it back on 106.9 regardless of the new format.

That is an excellent idea! I love it!

Ah, but remember that -- way back in 1967 -- KMPX FM 107 was the original free-form "underground" station here, with Tom Donahue, Bob McClay, Larry Miller, Bob Postle, Edward Bear, Dusty Street, etc., etc., back before they moved on and turned KSAN into the Jive 95.

How about a little Summer Of Love for a few days -- nothing but Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis, Credence, Sly & The Family Stone and other Bay Area groups of the era? "All Haight-Ashbury, All The Time!"

Unfortunately, the KMPX calls are now assigned to a TV station in Texas...

KMPX-FM San Francisco could be allowed!

Chris Kidd replies:

A changed in the FCC rules 15 or more years ago made call letters that could be shared between different services, AM, FM and TV. They also changed the rules to allow the same call letters (of different services) to be authorized in different cities.

You may remember KNX-TV in Los Angeles. As soon as that rule changed it immediatly became KCBS-TV Los Angeles. Although there was and is related ownership between them, most likely a letter of permission was filed from KCBS-AM San Francisco.

The company that has the call letters on one service must provide written permission to the other service. This is usually done with a one-time cash payment to the first station.

Therefore if Infinity wanted KMPX and they worked an agreement with that TV station we could hear the ID once again....KMPX-FM San Francisco!

There is a KMPX TV, but there is no KMPX-FM right now. And why stop at 1976? Let's get Larry Miller back from Boston and put him on at 12:00 Midnight, just like the summer of 1967.

I'm serious, it would be great. It wouldn't make any money, but it would be great.

I'm going to guess that, at this point in his life, Larry Miller would prefer to stay where he is, doing what he does (teaching), rather than working overnight in a city that hardly embraced him, for the ghost of a station that essentially mistreated him.

From the email conversations that I've had during the last year with him and with people who know him, the impression I got is that he's happy with what he's doing.

Unfortunately, quite a few of the others who were around during KMPX's brief "underground" existence have gone to that Big Studio In The Sky (including Tom Donahue, Stefan Ponek, Abe "Voco" Kesh and Bob McClay), although several (including Larry Ickes, Bobby Cole, Bob Postle, Edward Bear and Roland Young) are still with us.

I'd like to hear a clock ticking and slipping in the song "Talk, Talk" (Can't remember who performs it)

Well, of course that is true. But he is doing radio again, at WMBR. He will be
hosting the 1960's/early 70's show "Lost and Found" this season, Tuesdays 12 noon to 2 PM, beginning this week on October 4th.

It's a shorter commute, that's for sure.

I see on the Aircheck board here on our beloved Radio-Info.com that WMBR will be streaming the show live (as well as archiving it) at http://www.wmbr.org.

If you mean the new wave hit from the 1980s, you're going to either laugh or kick yourself for not knowing the artist.

The band's name was Talk Talk.
______________

The original song "Talk Talk" was done by the group "Music Machine"

I know that, but the poster didn't say whether he meant the song from the 60s or the one from the 80s.
______________
