106.9 The Fox Drops John and Nikki

The John & Nikki morning show was canned after it aired Friday morning on Saga Communication's Classic Rock "106.9 The Fox" WAFX Suffolk. The duo, John Reynolds and Nikki Reed, first aired together just over 13 months ago when the station replaced Reynolds' first partner, Leila Rice, with Nikki Reed the then news director/mornings at sister rocker "FM99" WNOR/98.7 Norfolk.

Before moving over to WAFX, Reed was with "FM99" WNOR/98.7 Norfolk's morning show, Tommy & Rumble, for 13 years. Reynolds was with the station since April 2004 when he moved to Hampton Roads from a sister station in Springfield IL.

We hear the Saga cluster (WNOR, WAFX, WJOI/1230) is trying to trim its budget. Earlier this month, the cluster laid off several from its promotions department, including coordinator Brandon Jackson and Director/Marketing Lisa Griffin. We also hear even the receptionist was let go for Ottomation. Back at WAFX, there are no format changes coming.

Classic rock veteran Mike Arlo on Saga's "106.9 The Fox" WAFX Suffolk moves to mornings from middays beginning Tuesday, September 2.

More To Come.

I want to know if anyone knows if Nikki Read is going back to FM99?

I'd just like to know the true reason for canning John and Nikki, and I find it hard to believe it was simply a move to cut costs. They had a large following every morning; it's my bet that they had a falling-out with Dave and/or other management types. I've always thought John was a great DJ, though I'd have preferred it if they'd kept Leila on. Nikki was a bit too coarse for my liking, but Leila was a real sweetheart and it was very difficult for John when he was told the station had let her go. I fail to understand why the station would let go of one of it's most popular radio shows. Arlo is great, but how can he and Mike Anthony hold the whole station together? There aren't enough work hours available in the day. This whole thing stinks of bad management decisions...

The Fox is shifting (back) to Classic Hits (Ie similar to The Wave minus the new stuff). Perhaps the change in format is why they changed their morning show. Also they changed their "Talking Jingles Guy" (lol, I have no idea what you call what he does). He sounds a bit 'softer' (He also does Oldies stations) then the old voice, so it shall be interesting to hear how the "New Fox" sounds.

The changes start Tuesday (Tomorrow).

The change should be interesting, to say the least, as far as seeing what the new playlist will be. Seems that they have been playing the same 35 songs for the last few years. The southern rock heavy rotation is what caused me to stop listening some time ago. For a station that billed itself as "classic rock" they sure didn't did too deep into that gold field.

I totally agree with dalpilot. I really liked John and Leila but not Nikki that much. She really wasn't that funny and was a bit crass. I am very disappointed in the loss of the morning show but do like the music alittle better as Doctor Fever says. Why can't they have both? Arlo just doesn't cut it for me, at least not for such a long period of time. I like some morning banter.
