106.9 The Ranch

Is there anyway that this station can upgrade their signal so it can cover Dallas? Because Ft. Worth has 95.9 The Ranch, why can't 106.9 The Ranch cover Dallas. They need to get rid of the 107.1 frequency so 106.9 can cover Dallas better. Any thoughts??

Why? It covers Ellis County just fine... and that's probably their target demo anyway...

Besides, it's not like there ain't enough country stations in the market...<P ID="signature">______________

Nobody plays this kind of music in the Dallas area

There's another factor in play: KHYI 95.3 The Range. Both the Range and the Ranch group play a non-mainstream country mix, and they compete for advertising dollars from the same alt.country venues (like the Love and War in Texas locations in Plano and Grapevine). Moving into KHYI's North Dallas territory would split the already thin listener base between the stations, weakening both.

That's not to say that such a move isn't in the Ranch's future plans... but if they do it, they'll need to be sure all their ducks are in a row, and come in with guns blazing. I suspect the recent aquisition of some of KTFW's assets has something to do with these plans, because they'll need to pull off some sort of station swap to get a decent signal in Dallas and Collin counties.

And I'm betting that they are making good dollars from Ennis High School Football.

I listen to this station regularly. Their signal into downtown Dallas this morning was not so good, but it's usually strong enough to keep me from punching out. Too bad one of the "Dallas" stations isn't playing this kind of country music. One thing I don't care so much for (and the Range does this too) is the constant Nashville-bashing. It sounds like jealousy to me. Not all of the Nashville stuff is so bad.

Keep in mind if they increased their power, etc,it will be a shuffle board again with other stations in N.Texas, possibly OKLA. It's not as easy as it once was a long long time ago.

KEMM92 Did you used to be a DJ at KEMM 92.1 in Greenville?

Re: 106.9 The Ranch - no, no, and no

The short answer is NO. First Broadcasting bought both these stations to do their usual power-increase-and-flip-it game. Even THEY couldn't do anything with either to make them point to DFW. The $3 million asking price for both stations ended up being cut to $1 mil when LKCM came a-callin'. They are landlocked. One of the two overlaps a small piece of Garland and East Dallas, but that's about it for DFW coverage. One tower's in Campbell (south of Commerce) and basically aims south; the other is in Kerens(? I think) and covers basically Ellis County. It's another ploy by LKCM to get something for nothing. They obviously WANT a full-stick to cover all of DFW, but, like the 99.1/107.9/101.7 triple-shot Kick-FM coverage of a few years back, you can't expect listeners to flip around the dial to keep hearing you constantly when they're out driving.

And the fact that, at last check, the 3 stations don't even simulcast, so there's little reason to find 'the other Ranch' if one frequency's in the middle of your favorite song and the signal's fizzling out.

LKCM should just bite the bullet and buy 95.3-The Range and 96.7-Twister and simulcast ALL of them for complete coverage, or better yet, ante up $50 or $60 mil and get a real 100,000 watt stick instead. For a company that has no interest in radio beyond this little "experiment," they sure are dropping and losing some serious money in the process, ESPECIALLY if, as one employee told me long ago, it's nothing more than a personal jukebox for one of the directors' girlfriends. It's tough to set fair spot rates if you have absolutely no presence in the Arbitrons.

There's a BIG temptation for some of these guys to have the "Holier than thou" factor in their station's music. "We're so cool cause we play songs nobody knows and we scoff when listeners wanna hear more mainstream stuff"... MOrning guy at 95.3 is like that...VERY full of himself for such a weak lil station...

The Ranch is weak. A better choice is going to be 95.7 KLAK, the new Collin County start up that Next Media is putting on the air early next year. Next Media is a top notch company who will put a quality product on the air.

GONE in Plano

With narrow filters in my car radio, I have a clear shot at it. But it is mega-deep fringe in Plano. Very weak signal if any at all, lots of lengthy nulls. I get KOVE 106.5 out of Galveston better on the other side of KDL. Based on how weak 106.9 is, I am surprised the Point out of Conroe isn't fighting it up here.

Where can I find the coverage area for 95.7???

I worked there for a little while doing weekends overnights and then later doing the Sunday Gospel show. I don't remember you. I am Danny Adams.

And I'm betting that you'd lose that bet.

KLAK correction

> Where can I find the coverage area for 95.7???

It's a typo. Should be 97.5.

I was there several times between 84 and 87. Was program director for a year or so. Sam Curry fired me. I forgot to thank him.

The ranch is probably the bst "sound of Texas" station out there. Who can disagree with that? The range is so worried about not being pure, they're missing the point. Not only does the Range have better imaging than the Ranch, I think they have a more solid grip on the reality of country music and how it translates into a business. Just today I heard someone on the range saying he doesn't watch CMT or like Toby Keith because it would be impure. C'mon, radio is a business.
