106-9 The Zone's New Call Letters-KZQN

I was wondering if the new station-Formerly known as The Point-plans to change its calls to distant itself away from its next-door sister, The Eagle. I believe The Classic Alternative Hits station is much competitive to Alternative AC KHJK, rather than The Buzz. My guess come new year's day it will be known as KZQN, instead of for the time being KHPT.

Well. today COX has flipped WHDR-A Former Active Rock Station in Miami and turned it into EZ93.1 It's real easy because that station is modeled after WDUV, An easy-listening station in Tampa Bay. Back to The Zone; The new call letters might be pending after COX files the paper work.

from the department of who cares.

Whether they do this or not depends on Cox's long term, detailed plan for 106.9. That detailed plan is shown below.

As you can see, the current 'format' of 106.9 is not necessarily a long term proposition. I'll believe a call letter change when I hear it.

From what I can tell, there's no plan to change the calls. With PPM, nobody really cares what your call letters are. Call letters are there to make the FCC happy, so as long as you do a proper legal, who cares?

Cox didn't change the calls on KTHT when it blew up Hot 97.1, either. Cumulus didn't change the calls when it blew up Jack-FM. Heck, back in the day, Group W never changed the calls on KODA when it became Sunny 99.1. Sometimes call letters are irrelevant.

As you can see, a lot of workday music listeners still call K-O-D-A, KODA, because it was synonomous with Elevator & Holiday Music, but it really phased out of Elevator Music quickly through several ownership changes, in which it ended up being owned by Clear Channel. KODA's former owners, Group W became a part of CBS. and to this very date, KODA has been a strong powerhouse in Houston's Workday Music Radio.

One only needs to look at the former Point, now Eagle, in Birmingham. Even though the format flipped over a year ago, it retains the WBPT calls. Not really a big deal. Since we're on the subject of The Zone, I'd like to make mention that someone at Cox Houston should listen to 106.9 The Zone at 6am on Sundays. The Zone's ID plays, followed by "Featuring 80 minutes of 80's music at 8, every weekday morning. Houston's 106.9 The Point. Best of the 80's and more.", which is followed by Mike Mollett's public affairs show. This has happened every Sunday morning since it flipped. Simple oversight for sure, but a bit sloppy nonetheless.

And where did you pull those calls from? I can think of one place. How are you so sure they're gonna KZQN?

Clever, sort of, but maybe you should do Fantasy Football instead of fantasy posting.

I heard that too.

I have to say, 106.9 in this iteration is now my favorite station. I've been waiting for a station that plays more 90s. I hope it sticks around - I'm actually listening.

Me too. Like what I'm hearing.

Agreed. Far better than at first listen, and a definite improvement over the stale Point. Maybe this is just me, but has anyone else noticed that since The Zone came about, 103.7 has added even more obscure songs to their playlist? It had been mentioned previously that 103.7 and 106.9 sound the same now, but I just don't hear it. 106.9 is playing songs that are pretty easily recognizable for us 30/40 somethings, while 103.7 is seemingly digging deeper and deeper into Steve Robison's closet. Again, maybe its just me.

I heard "6 Underground" for the first time in months on 103.7. The Zone seems to be playing it at least once a day.
