^Which is unfortunately close to the reality of radio in this area today. Way too many ill-conceived hybrid formats and CHR/AC/Rhythmic variants, while the audiences for Alternative, Active Rock, Country, Dance, and Smooth Jazz are left without proper outlets. But I guess with the economy being the way it is, mass appeal formats are the only viable option. What a shame.

Unfortunately, in this day and age, I think the Active Rock format is more viable than alternative. Active seems to have a much looser set of rules (Does it have trudging distortion? check Loud drums? check OR does it have that Alice In Chains-type ballad? yeah? ok, we'll add it). Alternative listeners usually prefer a more eclectic style of music so the format, as such, caters to a smaller amount of people. Active Rock will still be able to serve the lowest-common denominator by playing one mook-rock track after another.
I think this new* "Heritage Rock" format appeals to the lowest common denominator much better than a pure active rock format would. It enfranchises the upper end of the target demos by cutting out alot of the noise, it is lower risk in that it plays proven hits, and, with the PPM, it, in theory anyway, increases TSL without shinking audience size.
*I realize that Heritage Rock was simply called AOR in the 70s and 80s and that it is nothing new. The point is that the format has been absent from the Northeast for the last 15 years, and, as such, seems like a new format to some, particularly on the lower edges of the target demo.

WRRV 94CYY Radio 104.5 and FM 104.1 are really really good. I loved Radio 104.5 they played Green Day, Jimmy Eat World, all the good stuff.
