106 Jamz aircheck 1994

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2z9aMrJqgjE

Here is another aircheck of a Chicago station no longer with us that some remember fondly. I think this is from 1994 if I picked it up correctly from one of the station liners. It was taped off of 950 AM which I think was still WJPC at this point, though memory may not serve me. This seems to have been taped very early in the morning.

I have 4 or 5 more airchecks of 106 Jamz which I will post in the not so distant future.

106 Jamz and 100.3 Jamz in the DFDub were the two best urban stations I had ever heard in my life.

Thanks for posting these airchecks Scholarm! They bring back some great memories!

Thanks for the comments! I hope to post some more 106 Jamz and some WGCI-FM from the late 80s and early 90s in the near future.

Good question. There are some slow jams in this particular aircheck but I think it was regular programming.

did 106 jamz have a slowjam show ???
Actually no, That is why I liked them they had the local legend Pinkhouse(RIP)
on from 6pm- 10PM M-F. Pinkhouse was largely responsible for making rap mainstream
in Chicago. He hosted a nightly rap show which was often in the top ten 25-54.

He started in the mid to late 80's on 250 watt WKKC 89.3,( Kennedy-King Colleges radio
station.) He then helped launch WJPC Rap Radio 950 AM in the early 90's. He was then
kept on at 106 Jamz(WEJM 106.3 FM and 950 AM).

WJPC AM/FM was bought by Pyramid broadcasting, who owned V103 at the time.

WJPC was a simulcast for years as J 106, and previously WLNR FM and WJPC AM,
as "Chicago's soft touch". The AM had very low ratings especially as J106, usually
at 0.1 or 0.2. When they flipped the AM to rap and the FM to Dusties, the AM actually
beat the FM a few times with a 1.1 and 1.2, while the FM side stayed around 1.0.
They did very well for an AM music station.

At this time they were owned by Johnson Publishing Company of Ebony and Jet magazine
fame. They also had a whole line of cosmetics geared exclusively at African Americans.
I believe they were one of the first companies to do this.

Johnson owned WJPC 950 AM for years and was very successful as an urban contemporary
format. They then bought WLNR 106.3 FM in Lansing IL. and started the simulcast.

The call letters WJPC stood for "J"ohnson "P"ublising "C"ompany.

I dont have any 106 from 94 so this is great. i remmeber waking up to RAP RADIO 950AM WJPC they used to say 950AM and I'd jump outta bed thinkin I was late for school [lol]. but i was running the streets so much i never made any tapes, I wish i had.

Everyone knows how much I loved this station, the best Chicago ever had. And their production was top of the game. Scotty Webb the voice guy. I wish Power would use him. The crazy thing is, when Evergreen ended up merging with Chancellor, becoming AMFM then Clear Channel and they ended up buying WGCi they had to dump one station since they owned V103 it was only right to dump off WEJM.

I remember Crawford buying 106 and making it gospel. Only Three years later what happend but 102.3 became Hot 102 with nearly the same calls WVJM and the same voice guy I have only ONE sweeper of Scotty Webb Hot 102 Chicago's Blazin Jamz and i thought I had a logo but cant find one anywhere =[

Back to 106 I have airchecks of 96 and 97 and only one with Pinkhouse at the end of his shift, during the super 2pac mix the night that 2pac died. One day I will rip everything.

I just wish that Urban radio would leave the RNB on UAC, and go more Rap just like back in the day. I do enjoy late night Power 92, its evolved in that sense with Hood Radio aka Real Radio. But still hate the imaging. dang almost 10 years of Eric.

Man, I would love to hear those airchecks of 106 Jamz again. If you have any copies of a cat named JC Collins (he did overnights and weekends), let me know, because he is me. Seriously. I go by the name of Jo Jo Collins now and living in Wichita, Kansas working at a CBS, CW and Univision affiliated TV station.....
