1060 from New Orleans

Even though WWL is a daytime catch here on the west coast of Florida, I never even thought of listening for the 50kw station on 1060. On my walkman, all I get is spillover from our local 1040 and I can't null it out. So, I went out to the car radio to see how it is and I get some spillover from the station on 1040 but not as much. I can hear a station on 1060 but the interference from the neighboring station here makes it impossible so far to ID anything. I looked in the frequency guide and there is a station on the other side of the state of Florida but I shouldn't be able to hear anything, at least according to this.... http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WIXC&service=AM&status=L&hours=D When you look at the pattern for WLNO, it seems to send out a good signal in my direction.... http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=WLNO&service=AM&status=L&hours=D

Hopefully, an official ID will be heard soon.

Right after Sunrise in New Orleans is probably the best time to try and catch them. They would make it into south east Iowa for an hour after WWL would fade out. You should be able to get them if you try at that time. The Religious programming should make it easy to identify. As you may know they were once a great top 40 station.

I can easily get WWL and WLNO at night. I'm just looking for a daytime catch of WLNO now. 500 miles ain't bad for the daytime and I've long since logged WWL in the mddle of the day. From what I can hear on 1060 during the day, there wasn't any way to tell what the subject matter is. The religious talk should be obvious, as you say.

i've gotten 1060 N.O. from Yankeetown FL (about 1.5 hrs N of Tampa) fairly well. 870 WWL was like a local easily receiveable on seek.
No sign of it in Englewood FL-probably outside it's peripheral lobe.
Lots of HUGE skeeters. don't know how anyone can stand the summer there. But there were lots of people fishing.

It can be difficult to guage the actual antenna pattern of an AM station from the coverage map, especially if the coverage area includes salt water, as is the case with WLNO. It can be helpful to look at the actual pattern, such as: http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/ampat?call=WLNO&sid=. Pattern info is also available in the AM Query section of the fcc site.

Looking at this from the other end of the map, a few years ago I worked in the New Orleans area for a year and was able to reliably hear WDAE-620 from the Tampa-St Pete area all day long on my car radio as long as I was near water. It was especially strong along I-10 between the airport and the city. Salt water paths can really carry and AM station....

I used to pick up 1060 New Orleans then WNOE very well in the Chicago area right before New Orleans sunset in the late fall & winter months. It was a regular for a good 45 min each day in the 60s & 70s before it reduced power to protect KYW.

I was in a different part of Tampa this afternoon with a little less interference from the 1040 station and on my car radio around 5:30 I heard a religious broadcast on 1060. I figure it had to be from New Orleans. I checked around 6:30 and the frequency was being dominated by a Spanish station, probably the one that rules the frequency at night if I'm listening on my hand held radio and face it south. The sun was still up at the time.

It sounds like you were getting New Orleans. If you ever get the chance I'd be curious to know if you are able to pick up WLNO in that spot with less interference during mid day--say noon--2PM.

We used to rent a condo at Navarre Beach, FL, between Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach. WNOE (as it was then known) put in a fine signal every day, and a listenable signal at night. Same goes for WWL and WTIX (which each had better nightime signals than WNOE).
