1060 WIXC - Changes

Add another line to the book of bad programming decisions...

Instead of actually selling AM 1060 as a simulcast or sports station on the coast, the "brain" at Genesis has decided lease the entire station to someone else. Along with this comes the dropping of the sports format on August 1st for... are you ready for this... country music. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Just when the people in the coverage areas of 1060 and 1080 are getting used to finding THE ONLY 24 hour sports radio programming in East central Florida, Genesis pulls the plug for MONEY. Apparently 1080 is unaffected by the change; however they've already ceased the simulcast of the local afternoon show (Brady Ackerman & Jerry O'Neill) and 1060 is now strictly running ESPN Radio till the end of the month.

Once again... it's not about the listeners. It's about the owner's wallet.

You mean to tell me there's not enough country stations serving this area already? In Titusville one should be able to get at least three or four country stations, if not more on FM for that matter. Unless it's something like classic country we need another country station like we need to pay $4.00 for a gallon of gas.

It's not just country music but "Classic Country" I don't get music on AM, but the ex Program Director for The Hitkicker has been looking for a job so this is the result.

This station has a strange pattern for 50KW. May as well be 5KW. WDBO kicks their#$%%^^&&*(^%.
The patterns not so bad if you are a fish in the Atlantic who just happens to own a transister radio. From just listening to 1060 while driving around and from reading other posts on WIXC in the past on this board, the stations signal is not as good as it used to be. This is due to them not taking care of the transmitter, towers and ground system. You could put all the power you want into the transmitter, but if your tower and ground system is neglected you won't get the desired signal. Take their nighttime signal for example. Once upon a time I was able to get 1060 decently in Palm Bay, not anymore, even though their pattern still includes Palm Bay. I'm lucky if I could pick up a faint signal at all now. Here's their projected pattern (I know radio-locator is not 100% accurate, but it's pretty close)

Back in the daze, you could pick them up even further than Palm Bay..You're right, It's a matter of the ground system going down the tubes for all these years.. The Old Collins Tansmitters used to make a difference with the Big Ass tubes in a lot of stations in Brevard..Solid state is fine..But How many of you would like to have one of those old 1000 watt Crown Tube amps on your stereo?? I stll do! BIG APE

i noticed that 1060 did not come in palm bay well at all. i used to live in palm bay and was surprised at that. oh well, i guess that station will just keep going down the tubes.

Sometimes i can pick them up here in altamonte but not that often.

When has radio ever been "about the listeners?" What day was that? From the time KDKA began selling soap, it's always been about "the owners wallet." Do you think these stations are run by charity?

CC, Cox, CBS aren't driven by money? Back in the day, Nationwide, Edens, ABC, Autry, CBS, NBC, All-Pro...they were all run for profit, first and foremost. You just never noticed because they ran formats that appealed to you.

This is another reason I have XM and also listen to stations online. Central Florida is the worst area in the country for sports fans.
And east central Florida is among the worst for all radio except oldies (We have 103.7 and 98.5 who do a good job)

Easy now chief.... Where did I say it was ever about the listeners? I merely stated the fact that Genesis has most likely done ZERO research and literally made the decision to broker WIXC within a few days. That sir is bad radio business. But yes, "back in the day" as you say...it was about money as well; but not to the extent of it is now. Back then LOCAL research was done to dictate formats, music programming, and actual involvement in the community. Today, most decisions are made by a suit hundreds of miles away and maybe by someone that's never even visited the community the station is broadcasting too. That's the difference between THEN and now.

"Classic Country",would that be Pre-Rascal Flatts,Pre-Garth Brooks or Pre-Urban Cowboy "Classic Country"???

I don't know how far back you go, but even 20+ years ago I worked at stations where research and decisions were made at a corporate level by suits who didn't live in the market. Our stations shared music research on weekly conference calls, and we used promotional ideas our that our sister stations did, too. I will agree there seemed to be more local community involvement back then, but then again, we had a full compliment of live bodies on 24/7, too. Remember the days of the 10p-2a shift? LOL. But back then, we weren't competing with iPods, satellite, the Internet (the biggest cause of our doom), and Wii. When you're the only place in town to get the music you want, and sponsors have to buy, it's a lot easier to make and spend money.

Look, I'm not loving the current radio landscape. I think terrestrial radio is terrible these days. I'm more likely to listen to my iPod. Radio's not "hip" anymore. But don't kid yourself: it was ALWAYS about the money even back then. We just never noticed because we were getting the programming we wanted.

Jones has a Classic Country satellite format, jocked and everything. 'Tis why I had to leave WKIQ back in 1998 when they flipped formats from talk to ... Classic Hit Country 1240... yeehaw. Unless Ted is opting to going back to days of playing them himself, they're probably going to just pipe that feed in.

When did 1060 go 50k ?
I havent listened to them since they were WAMT, and even then, they were existing. If they are 50k now their coverage pattern is terrible, They used to be 10k and 5k at night.

Classic Country, just when the Sports was starting to work out too. How many Country stations do we have now?

There was an article today in the Florida Today about Ted Turners LMA with Genisis. He has big plans and wants to keep the local sports on the air, but he will play classic Country, but doesnt say what years or artists songs that will be played for example. Wait and see.

Nightmare flashback...I still had 1060 on my pre set and I hit it and heard the type of music I used to hear on EVERY redio station while driving through Georgia, South and North Carolina and Most of Virginia. I would rather have my teeth drilled without novicane rather than listen to that "stuff"

I like the new 1060, however, I would rather have it on FM. Classic Country is a lot better than Oldies as they don't wear old the same old crap like the Classic Hits stations do.

i'll have to dx this one and check it out. i hope they become live and local. that would be pretty cool. i hope there just not another automated station...
