1060 WIXC - Changes

Where does WINT play into this? They changed formats.

WINT actually has Pre Sunrise Authority and Post Sunset Authority, about 100 Watts, operating from 6am to local sunrise and 2 hours before sunset to 2 hours after sunset/ I'm a stickler for facts and I know this doesn't make a huge difference, LOL.

However, I agree that this is the best format WIXC could be doing at this point.

Is WINT (still) doing Adult Standards? Probably as good as anything one could do with it, or any AM daytimer, for that matter. Many daytime-only AM stations have disappeared over the past 20 years or so. Just gave up, sent the license back to DC and knocked down the stick(s).

But, and it is a BIG BUT, if WINT is lucky enough to have some longtime, well-connected, well-liked salespeople, the programming really doesn't matter. Selling advertising on little AM stations is all about relationships.

WIXC needs to play the same game, but concentrate nearly all their efforts on Titusville. WINT could do the same in Melbourne and do okay.

The best thing either of these stations could do is to seek out the best retired media salespeople in those respective towns and hire them. Pay them more than they're worth and treat them like gold. Let them make their own hours and don't even try to "manage" them. Set no goals or timetables. Just let them do it on their own schedule and their own terms. Then sit back and watch the money roll in...

Not paying attention? WINT is running ESPN sports, has been for several months now.

It's an LMA through a company that thrives on cost-cutter techniques such as automation. Add to the mix, the format is most likely satellite delivered, ala Jones Sat Radio, and the reasons to not be live-and-local are pretty easy to keep in mind for the management staff. Remember, it just has to sell. That, and it's music on AM. Not exactly throwing some new breakthrough in programming onto our airwaves.

Check with sunbiz.org and you'll find that Whiskey River Broadcasting was formed in June, 2008 so I'm not sure what you mean about "a company that thrives on cost-cutter techniques such as automation". Yes, WIXC is partially automated, and partially live at the moment. Hey, the new format has been on the air for less than a month. Ted Turner is betting that if he offers people something they want to listen to that they can't get anywhere else, they'll tune in. AM music has appealed to pople very recently. Watch Radio and Records in 6 months for ratings info, and compare that to the ESPN format numbers from the past 3 year. That will tell the story better than all of our jawboning.

What happened???? Ha Ha... Didn't think I was gonna have to go back to one of the first pages in this topic so soon to prove my point. I'll be looking for those ratings. I still say they won't eclipse the listeners ESPN Radio did.

And of course, Ted Turner is no longer there...

WIXC will get a lower number than it had last book with ESPN. If Ted's classic country product would have remained the ratings would have come and you would have seen an increase. But I bet they lost most listeners when they let the equivilant of a high school radio club program a classic country station. There was a month that was very painful to listen to. I only drive through Brevard so I dont get it 24/7 (even though it is online now). The new "standards" sounds better as far as the programming goes but the format wont work. They play really obscure standards and you dont even hear much Sinatra and the like which you would expect from "Adult Standards". Sad to watch it go downhill like it has.

Classic country getting better numbers then Adult Standards or ESPN?

No.

The reason his format was dumped and he left is 'cuse he couldn't pay the bills.. lack of advertisers=can't pay the bills lack of advertisers means no listeners, no listeners means no ratings...

Although WIXC's 50K on 1060 burns a hole through downtown Titusville, the night signal isn't competitive in the south half of the county, so ratings for any format aren't going to light up the sky. Ratings--and the agency biz resulting from ratings--cannot be a consideration for this property. But in Titusville proper, 1060 is capable of stirring up enough activity if it's programmed correctly to develop a clientele among the small, local, direct businesses.

FWIW, the same goes for WINT, regardless of the format, in Melbourne. These are both crippled facilities relative to the elongated Brevard County Arbitron market, so they're never going to score the kind of numbers enabling them to take a dime away from any FM. But if they can sell directly to businesses within 5 miles of their tower site, they may be able to scratch out a living.

Given the sheer number of FM signals serving the market, the lousy conductivity for AM signals with that sandy soil, and the general state of AM radio everywhere today, the prospects for WIXC and WINT are extremely meager.

But at least WIXC is a fulltime radio station in Titusville, and wherever a station can be heard loud & clear 24/7, it has a chance.

As a daytimer (try to imagine a daytime-only TV station or a daytime-only website), WINT's window of viability closed about 30 years ago. Why it is still on the air in 2008 is beyond me. The land it's sitting on has to be worth more than the radio station, unless it's completely unsalvageable swampland. I'm just glad I'm not the one responsible for making it a profitable enterprise.

You know exactly what I'm talking about, Smitty, but you can continue with the game if you want. If you really do know what you say you know, there's only a couple of people who would know that and it's pretty obvious which ones you ain't. That's what I meant by "game", portraying yourself as an insider "in the know" but saying nothing.

No skin off my nose, though. At this point it's clear that WIXC ain't working. It will not be going to ESPN. It will not be going to News/Talk. It will not be going to News/Talk. It will not be going to Classic Rock or Light Rock or Country. I see a station of brokered shows in the future. Sherlock won't be around after that.

For all the station could have been worth to its owners, it will now diminish enormously. There is no space in Brevard County for such a station that is vastly overpowered for its limited reach. Titusville alone is a nothing market of less than 50,000 people so you have to have something that sizzles to make the station into something and sell it throughout the county.

The shame is that it was sounding so good, and could have continued sounding good. And, it had a product that could be sold. It doesn't now. Maybe it will on 12/08 but forgive me if I have my doubts.

Smitty? You are lost. First Jerry now Smitty. Just place a bet with me....I bet you that my name is not Jerry or Smitty and the station will change to news talk

Re: What a waste

Wow, Brevards big talker, and not a single local show ;D Looks like their just picking up some of the programing from their sister station 1190 WAMT. But unlike 1190 at least 1060 can stay on 24 hrs. But they shouldn't call themselves Brevards big talker, that's false advertising, not that their going to sell any. Nonetheless it will still be waste of frequency spectrum and electricity.

I don't expect them to listen to what I've got to say, I just know that a lack of local content never helps.

SHoulda figured Genesis would do this on the cheap!

Show me one station or goup thats not doing it on the "cheap"

What does this mean for 1300 ...John Harper had Laura, O'Reilly, Ramsey, Savage etc over at
WMEL in Cocoa. Has he given up on leasing that place?

oh well. at least i won't have to dx 1060 anymore. good job. this won't last long. why just not sell the damn station? well enjoy it. somehow i figured talk would come to 1060. the cheapest thing they could do. well let's see how long this one lasts.

Blessings in disguise. Go 1060, I am sure the people in the Bahamas would like to hear what your screaming over Brevard county as well. BYW, your station is overmodulated. With Talk so to be in place brought to you by Genisis, I wonder how does Greg Sherlock feel about that? He cant steal other stations formats now.

If you all will remember when Genesis purchased 1060, they tried the NewsTalk format and it did not last long. In fact, it was a big flop! The ONLY format that has brought any sort of rating is the Adult Standards format with live, local morning/evening drive and automation between and overnights. The station was able to acquire a 3.2 in the book, the highest rating the station ever received since it was put back on the air in 1992 by Gene Sego, Sr. So, to say that the Adult Standards will not work is not true. The only bad thing was Bruce Maduri changed the format to sports 2 weeks before the book came out with the 3.2 rating. Even Bruce Maduri thought he made a mistake but he would never admit that. If they were to keep the Adult Standards format, leave Greg Sherlock live in the morning drive, bring in a local guy for evening drive, and do it for at least a few years, they could regain those listeners they lost when they switched to sports. Build the rating and a local sales team to sell the format, with the rating to support the sales, and it would be a winning combo!

You're exactly right.. but Genesis isn't patient and doesn't like to spend much money.. you've helped proved my point ;)

I just noticed on the website that Programming is scheduled from 5a-9p M-F. Any idea what the plan is for overnights and weekends? Brokered? Repeats? Music?

A promo is running, talking about the Talk line up during the day, and Music, what they are playing now
from 9pm to 5am ..Still wonder what WMEL 1300 will do to fill the Dave Ramsey, Bill O'Reiily and Mike
Savage slots ...they've got Dougs Good day in morning drive and Bortz mid day...can't imagine Brevard
supporting 3 talkers ...
