107.1 coming back already

HA! Not even a full week ago, I suggested that somebody else in B-P should do sports. But of course, it's going to be Sporting News Radio, because a city full of Red Sox fans would have no interest in hearing WEEI.

It may make sense to add some WEEI programming. Also, we are developing a regional ensemble local morning TV show that will simulcast on WNMR. Can't say yet, but more radio likely to come.

Sorry Will, but I don't agree with you on that one. There are a fair amount of Red Sox fans in the market...but also a ton of Yankee fans. The Patriots and the Giants both have big bases. The Bruins and Canadiens are both big. WEEI is almost 100% Boston-sports focused and the Burl-Platts market isn't. Plus, the WEEI programming rights fee is about $100,000.00 a year...and if the Red Sox are in a contract with another station then you don't get them and you have to use fill programming when Sox are on...same with Celtics. I know because I looked into it for a similar market and decided against it.

Yes, there is a contingent of New York fans in the market for obvious reasons. But the fact of the matter is that the Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins are the only teams whose entire schedule is on Burlington cable television. I don't care about listeners on the New York side...the money is in Burlington. Hell, Plattsburgh wasn't in any market 10 years ago.

I can see where 107.1 wouldn't pay six figures for WEEI without having either the Sox or Celtics contracts...but this is something that WJOY should consider.

I don't get your Burlington cable arguement. More owners in the market care about the Plattsburgh side because there's needed money being booked out of that market. Did you know that New York Lotto won't buy anything but a New-York licensed radio station? Have you heard the car dealers out of Plattsburgh and the money they're spending? Plattsburgh may not have been a market 10 years ago...but it is now....and the ratings count towards national buys. The revenues count toward making monthly goals. There's no way Hall will pony up $100,000 for WEEI because the return isn't a sure enough thing.

Well, I'm not saying that Clinton/Essex counties are chopped liver entirely...but it's still a Boston sports market first and a New York sports market second.

100K is a steep franchise fee...perhaps Entercom doesn't realize that B-P is not Boston.

Sporting news radio?? Like that will succeed. The best network for sports is ESPN and it's already on in the market. Yes I know it is on AM but it still is by far the best All Sports Network going.

BSBoy:

Thank you for your professional assessment of the prospects of our new venture. I just wish we would have talked to you before we made our programming decisions ;) It's our hope that the reality of our choice will lead to a much better outcome then you theorize. I believe that our chances for success will be buoyed by our local programming (which includes quite a few local games), our imagery and promotional efforts, our great sales department and hopefully less glitch filled automation during network broadcasts.

I see a lot of nay saying on the internets but this time it is about my house and I feel compelled to speak up. Though your prediction is somewhat dire, I'm sure you wish us luck. For our part we intend to work hard and make the most of what we are doing. My prediction is accolades and respect in future posts, years of game-full employment for a good group of people and happy advertisers and listeners.

I hope so. About time somebody broadcasts BHS on a regular basis. NWVT does a good job, but doesn't have the resources to air the whole schedule. They're an urban high school that deserves the good terrestrial coverage that Spaulding and Rutland and BFA get from their hometown stations.

Since you seem to be vested in this project, I only wish you the best of luck. As far as asking my advice, I cost too much. Time will only tell how your new venture will work out. I have learned the hard way that talk is cheap.
Once again, good luck.

Thanks for the good wishes BS. 107.1 is part of a larger venture, but its success is important to us. And yes time always does tell. More to come.

Louie, I have no doubt that you will be a success as you have been in the past. It's the top of the structure you need to worry about. Today everyone has dreams of candy and ice cream. Lets see what it all looks like in a year.
Once again, good luck!

No.

Oh but there’s much more to the story, which I am confident will come out. Suffice it to say the principal of this company is a good guy. Which explains my involvement.

BS

True I do love to crack wise… but I am deadly serious. I waited a long time to jump back in. I am operating under the premise that life is to short to waist time doing anything other than what I specifically want to accomplish… Being in with the right people is essential to that goal. I can assure you that the people I am now working with have been properly vetted and are good folks.

I have enjoyed an interesting and fairly accomplished career. I have taken chances, which in some cases have fallen short of expectations. But through all of the ups and downs I have maintained a fairly good reputation because I’m a decent guy. I am proud of my standing in and out of the broadcast community and I would not place it in jeopardy by associating with less than honorable partners. Laugh if you want to, but WNMR is only a small part of a very cool larger plan.

And trust me… I know for a fact there is more to this story you sited.
