107.1 The Big Wazoo is no more!

107.1 WAZU is no more! WAZU is now playing "new country and nothing but new country" Wink 107.1.

Amazed how many years WAZU's previous format lasted, the Wazoo format dated back to Jacor if I remember.

What I wished I could see is the heavy metal rocker that had their alarm clock set to 107.1 and woke up to "The Wink" this morning. That would have been worth the price of admission.

So is this country station #4 in Columbus? How creative!

Not only that, I bet more than a few of their listeners at least intentionally damaged their radio after waking up to "THe Wink" this morning. I envision several radios being thrown across the room
after these die-hard heavy metal rockers had a very rude awakening with C.W. music . :D

I think we need at least a couple more to satisfy all the rednecks here in Cowlumbus. Afterall, 4 Country stations vs 1 crappy CHR spreads much joy here on the airwaves of our metropolis.

^ I don't see anything. Maybe if you "wink", you miss it!

??? New Country, and only new country?
The demand for *anything* that's not new, but also not whiney twiney...what about that stuff?

Hey, maybe it's "Wink" as in "not really  ;)"  I.e, "Oh yeah, sure, we're really starting up yet another Country station, Wink, Wink. ;) ;)"

It's actually been this bad before.  I believe it was exactly 9 years ago.  We already had Nationwide's COL,  Jacor's HOK, and CLT all doing Country.  (Nabco's WMNI-AM may even have been doing some sort of Real Country at that point, too...I don't recall for sure on that point.)  Then Jacor bought 105.7 (pre-signal upgrade) from Rob Case (now owner of intriguing new 91.5 WHKC) and flipped it from Arrow Classic Hits to Hot Country "Kix."  I'm not sure they even broke half a share.  They quickly changed 105.7 to a simulcast of K95.5.  Equally laughable ratings.  Then they changed it to the "original" Fox, Classic Hits WKFX (not the later WFJX).

never ceases to amaze me how companies will try country without a "full market signal" or a signal that doesn't cover the country zips, and then be surprised when they don't get numbers. If you don't match the format leader signal for signal then it's GAME OVER MAN, before the contest even starts. Just my opinion and I could be wrong.

Double-check WHOK's positioning statement. Pretty much covers that.

You know what they say about country music songs? If you play them backwards your wife comes back, your dog comes back home, the cinder blocks disappear from beneath the '74 Chevy pickup in your front yard, and you get your job back.

Looks like Wilks really has the Circleville country radio market under control now.

C'mon, give Wilks credit. They did their homework. Scientific studies show that cows like New Country and it makes them produce more milk. Wilks is a corporate hero to all them farmers down there. Barkle's Cow-Feed 'n Ice Cream Shack has already dumped its 75-year relationship with the Circleville Shopper and signed a long-term deal with 107.1.

In fact -- and I probably shouldn't leak this out -- plans are already in the works to have Jeff Wilks crown the Circleville Pumpkin Queen next year. He's also going to be guest of honor at the Hog Call. That's kind of a gutsy move, since everyone know Hogs are partial to Country Legends. But since Arbitron has decided only cows will get PPM's (at least until they devise a workaround for the pig-slop problem), in the long term it won't make much difference.

The US Census Bureau confirms it....

Circleville city, Ohio
Total population 68,031

Male human 6,563
Female human 6,922
Cow 54,546

Heck....we need one more country station to meet the cume ;)

In all seriousness, we know Wilks M.O. is Buy,Cut,Sell. So that got me to thinking... why these moves? I fail to believe that someone could be so dumb as to have two country stations in the same cluster with so much overlap without a valid reason. So what's the rationale?

Is it historically that a country music station flip turns the revenue around the quickest so they can make the station easier to sell quickly? Somewhere along those lines?

And why "Wink"?!? As a country station... I don't know... To me that sounds more like a pop station. Something teenage girls would tune into to hear boy bands.
